Having moved my computer downstairs the new HomeHub thing then decided that even 6 feet was too far to successfully broadcast a signal across - clearly the brief period when it did work was an utter fluke - and so I have now resorted to the ethernet cable. Which is great because it's apparently giving me 6Mb, but may spoil me utterly for ever going back to wireless when I get around to buying another router.

In other news, there is the reorganisation. Can I just say that while I've revelled at times in being a team of one, particularly since it lets me out of tedious team meetings at ungodly hours, the downside of it is that when they draw up plans for reorganisation it's very easy for a post like that to drop off the map. As mine has. Hmmmph. Anyway, I'm already due to be meeting with one of the senior managers on Friday and who knows what bollocks she is going to come out with. Not that I think I'm really for the chop, but who knows what asshattery can happen?

I've also given up on the concept of moving house, even though it vexes me to get up before the sun rises and get home long after it's set, but that's a winter problem in general. Frankly, I hate moving house - there was a three year period where I moved annually and I loathed the experience every single time and vowed not to do it again for as long as possible - and while I hate the commute, I hate packing up and moving (not to mention the idiocy involved in actually selling the house) even more. Plus within walking distance from my current house I have a convenience store, a library, a pizza place, a chip shop, a shop that sells ferret food and a bus stop to town. Within 5 minutes drive I have a 24-hour Asda and a post office and another library. I'm currently of the opinion that if I cannot replicate this set-up to some significant extent, I don't want to play. ;)

Lastly, is tonight's SG-1 a Daniel-free episode? Because if it is then I'll just rewind the tape...

Alas, my poor Linksys wireless router seems to have bitten the dust. Not helped by last night's two powercuts, I think - I'd only just rebooted everything when the power went out again and it wasn't overly happy before that.

Coincidentally, BT had sent me one of those new HomeHub things and so today I spent a fruitless couple of hours trying to get that to work wirelessly before resigning myself to having to cart the computer downstairs. Apparently if your wireless set-up is only a couple of feet away from the hub it works perfectly (not that you'd need it to when an ethernet cable would do) but otherwise no dice.

Still, it's okay as a temporary replacement while I look around for something else... and at least I'm back online! *stops twitching*

I can walk and chew gum at the same time, not that I chew gum that often, but it's disconcerting to discover that I'm still apparently the world's least coordinated human being.

Or at least that's the impression I've gained from attempting to go along with an exercise dvd I rented, more out of curiosity than hope... it seems that, as I was in the days when my mother used to call me 'Calamity Jane', I am incapable of managing a sequence of actions without dire consequences. Single actions, yes, but anything that involves doing one thing, then doing something else and something else after that in quick succession, not so good.

So much for that version of Plan A. At least my use of the Amazon dvd rental system allows me to discover this cheaply! ;)

And speaking of dvds (hey, nice segway!), I probably shouldn't mention to a couple of people on my friendslist who're bound to get overexcited that season 2 of Judge John Deed is out in February.

You know, every time I end up writing Stargate SG-1 fic, I swear I spend as much time trying to figure out ingenious ways to get people stranded offworld back home without the use of a functioning GDO of their own as I do figuring out anything else. Damn canon devices. And yes, Jack and Daniel are currently stranded offworld. But at least they're together now, which they weren't (for reasons I have no intention of going into) for about the first 12,000 words.

I guess every fandom probably has things like this (and if so, please feel free to share with me what they are...), but surely I can't be alone in my vexation? Also suggestions for dealing with the GDO issue gratefully considered!

E.T.A.: it's set in season 1...

Anyone on my friendslist, who also uses Opera as a browser, know how I can get rid of the typed-in addresses? I have a whole bunch of them in the address bar and for many of them I will never visit the site again and therefore don't need to have them there to pop up...

Suggestions gratefully received! :)

Oops. The Wordmeter website appears to have been suspended, this is not good - somehow I suspect it's probably due to a NaNoWriMo-associated bandwidth spike! ;)

In other (non-NaNoWriMo) news, so therefore this post can be unfiltered, I was supposed to be moving offices tomorrow. I've been after a permanent office - or at least as permanent an office as a local government employee ever gets - for a while since I've been peripatetic and I'm getting bored with it. Since I was passing the building I'm supposed to be moving to, I thought I'd drop in and see where I was going to be.

G: me, hello there!
A: admin flunky, not the one I've been liaising with...

G: Which one's my desk?
A: That one. *points*
G: Where's the computer?
A: Oh, aren't you bringing one with you?
G: Where would I be bringing one from since I've not had a permanent office before?

*headdesk*

The remote control for my vcr has crapped out, thus making it impossible to program. Grrr.

And to add insult to injury, my replacement vcr (are you surprised I have one?) is also one of those that needs a remote to even set it up and the remote is somewhere in the house. I have no idea where. *headdesk* Found it! :)

I got hold of the larger version of the latest episode of Heroes and the sound is buggered up - I can get one channel, the background music, but no dialogue! :(

So I'm forced to acquire another version (oh, how my ISP loves me...) and am now watching Boston Legal instead... not that this is a particular hardship, but since half my friendslist were enthusing about Heroes, it's annoying!

Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] goodnightlady:

LJ has a feed for the latest images posted publicly here:
http://www.livejournal.com/stats/latest-img.bml

Someone has set up a community to scrape off any image that is posted that meets LJ icon requirements and post them to a community. Now, the part that's the most annoying is that the images are hotlinked from the image source.

You can opt out of your posts being included in the latest feed by going to the Admin Console and type in these commands:

Journal Users:
set latest_optout yes

Community maintainers:
set for "community name" latest_optout yes

Though Asda is my closest supermarket (less than 5 minutes drive, or 15 minutes walk if I'm feeling virtuous) there are lots of things I prefer to buy from other supermarkets - Asda's guacamole, for example, is just vile slop.

However, one thing they seem to do well is ready-made trifle and their chocolate trifle is my particular favourite. It's cream, chocolate mousse and chocolate cake and is utterly nummy. It also makes a big mess when you drop it in the middle of the aisle. Oops! :P

Dear company from which I'm trying to buy stuff online,

I can only assume that the fact that it's almost been an hour since your website buggered up my payment, that I can't get through on your customer service number and nobody has called me back once I got tired of hanging on and listening to your recorded message chirp how wonderful your company is, that you don't actually want my current and potential future orders.

Fair enough.

No love,
Me

So now, after the saga of 'BT doesn't know what Livejournal is', we have 'BT's mail system is shot to buggery'. No mail for me, not all day and who knows when it will be fixed...

Just wondering if it's messed up outgoing as well: [livejournal.com profile] moonlettuce, did you get the email I sent you about the hotel? ;)

*swelters* It's now as warm here, at just after midnight, as the average temperature for the month this time of year. Unnatural weather.

Meanwhile, in other news, I've just completed my first week as acting team manager. And god help me, I've enjoyed it, so there is clearly no hope for me. I have to say I wasn't completely sure how the people I'm managing would take it, since I'm younger than at least five of them (I'm managing a team of nine) but I decided the best thing to do was just jump right in there.

That seems to have worked and even M (the most potentially problematic, since there's still an outstanding dispute between him and his former manager, who's currently off long-term sick, with mutual complaints of bullying and the unions involved) has apparently been quite happy with me being in charge.

Interviews for the post I'm currently covering are in a couple of weeks, so we'll see if they actually manage to get someone who's appointable, at least on a temporary basis - that's much more likely if there's someone likely from inside the council but I've not heard anything yet about who's applied for it. There are still some problems with the dynamics within the team and it's all been more than a little isolationist, so they need a strong manager to start to sort all that out. And no, I didn't apply for it.

At the moment I'm a bit torn, really - I like my other job, which is money for old rope and I've only been in post a year so it's much too early to be thinking about moving onwards and upwards. It's good experience, though, and maybe I'll change my mind in a while. At least I know now that if I can acquit myself well in this period and the current lot of senior managers hang around for a couple of years, I really won't have to work too hard to get a team manager post if/when I do decide I want it... ;)

So, yesterday I couldn't get into livejournal at all, not on any browser, though I was reliably assured (waves to [livejournal.com profile] cycnus39) that it was working. I even uninstalled various things that I thought might be interfering with it, since the problem had started soon after I got an update on something but still no joy.

Then I had a brief email exchange with my ISP's 'help' people:

Me: Everything else is loading but not livejournal, in any browser, are you guys blocking it?

Them: No, it's your browser, here's how to tinker with it. If that doesn't work, talk to livejournal.

Me: No, I told you it's not my browser, but I tried your idiotic suggestions anyway and guess what, they didn't work. Livejournal is working, the problem is with you.

Them: ....

And this morning it's working. Except for [livejournal.com profile] danielpix, which I can post to but which won't load in Opera but it will in other browsers. And apparently my friends pages will load but I can't read comments on any posts in that browser either. Grrrrrr.

Driving to work this morning, I'd diagnosed the boy-racer sound coming from the front of the car as a sure sign that the front end of my exhaust was on its way out. On the way home, I wondered whether it could last till the weekend, when it would be more convenient for me to get it replaced. Just north of the Leicester Forest East service station, I discovered it couldn't... ;)

Meanwhile, in other news: being a masochist, I was prevailed upon to take on some management responsibilities (you're here in the building anyway and you seem to know what you're talking about and we neeeeeeed you! *whimper*). On my terms, and for the period of this week and the next 3 weeks only, I've accepted. And in fact, so far it hasn't been too bad. One of the people I thought would balk at me telling her what to do has happily done as she's told, partly because I was rescuing her from a shitty situation where she could have been blamed for something that wasn't her fault, I'm sure.

Ask me again in a couple of weeks what I think, but it's an interesting experience and it can never hurt to have senior management think you're doing them a favour.

Actually, the main problem today (other than the sweltering weather, and all my US friendslist people can just button it, okay?) was that the kettle broke. :(
graculus: (coffee)
Went to see the quack this morning - he looked at my throat, listened to my lungs and then declared that I'd picked up a bug and that he couldn't give me anything for it anyway, since it would work its way out.

Well, that was worth it. I hope you guys are all happy now! :P

One of the offices where I'm currently spending my time is in quite a rough estate, so much so that apparently in recent days when there was an overflowing water main, the water board peeps refused to stay in the area without a police escort.

I've never really given it much thought, as I drive a dirty and middle-aged car which doesn't have central locking, making it just that little bit harder to grab stuff off the passenger seat. My briefcase (such as it is) usually goes into the footwell that side, or behind the seat.

Anyway, I found out this morning that yesterday our new temporary manager (who started work last Monday) got robbed as she was getting out of her car at the local shops. Apparently she's now not only not coming back to this office, she's refusing to come back to the city, despite being promised alternate accommodation. *sigh* Time for round four or five of 'try and persuade [Graculus] to do stuff that really isn't in her job description'?

In other news, I've been taking antihistamines on the chance that my throat thing could be an allergic reaction to something or other and I have to say I'm feeling much better. So maybe I'll tempt the wrath of my friendslist and cancel my Friday morning doctor's appointment... ;)
graculus: (oh please)
*wonders if booking doctor's appointment for Friday morning will stop people nagging her*

Probably not. ;)

In other news, my season 1 Slings and Arrows dvd set arrived this morning...
