What I've read since my last post about books, a month ago:

Every Which Way But Dead by Kim Harrison (bored now!)
Christine Falls by Benjamin Black (okay but not great)
Pelagia and the Black Monk by Boris Akunin (not as good as the previous one in the series)
Gideon the Cutpurse by Linda Buckley-Archer (why are publishers apparently so obsessed with finding 'the next JKR'?)
The Ninth Stone by Kylie Fitzpatrick (a real curate's egg)
The Tin Roof Blowdown by James Lee Burke (so good! highly recommended!)
The Ascendancy Veil by Chris Wooding (final book of trilogy, highly recommended!)
The Akhenaten Adventure by PB Kerr (Jonathan Stroud sets a tough act to follow)
Country of the Blind by Christopher Brookmyre (needs a good editor?)

And I'm currently reading Lirael by Garth Nix. As usual, more commentary on the above can be found here.

First lines music meme, gakked from [livejournal.com profile] aizjanika. The rules:

Put your current music playlist on "shuffle" and list the first line of each of the first 30 songs (no matter how embarrassing). Post in your journal and see if your readers can guess the title and artist.

I've also cut those where the title is the first line! )

Many of these are pretty obscure, so I'll be impressed if anyone gets them...

Time to tidy up the music meme, as well - guess the ones that are left over from here *adds more lyrics* :

2. Ain’t thinking ‘bout love today / Lost in the sunlight / Walking down memory lane / Ain’t thinking ‘bout you today / People from the past that I knew / Are slowly slipping away

3. I could be just like the calm before the storm boy / Waiting for all hell yeah to break loose / I could be innocent or I could be guilty / Doesn't mean that I won't believe in the news

4. Well the bottom fell out / On our summer / But we knew / What we got ourselves into / (Theyre sayin) / Let's go to San Diego / where all the crazy kids go

5. Staring at a maple leaf / Leaning on the mother tree / I said to myself we all lost touch / Your favorite fruit is chocolate covered cherries / And seedless watermelon / Nothing from the ground is good enough

10. Feelin' better / Since I surrendered / You can't climb / 'Till you're ready to fall / You're not a land mine / You're not a gold mine / No you're not mine at all

11. And it's true we named our children / after towns that we've never been to / And it's true that the clouds just hung around / like black Cadillacs outside a funeral

12. I wish you'd stop ignoring me, because it's sending me to despair / Without a sound, yeah, you're calling me, and I don't think it's very fair / Oh, but you're an explosion (you're dynamite) / Your name isn't Rio, but I don't care for sand / Lighting the fuse might result in a bang, b-b-bang, go!

17. I am here watching your form / slowly pacing in the dawn, as all the stars die / Yeah you're like a hit you are tailored just to fit the changing season / Baby what is this we are two star crossed bits of an equation

Guesses, anyone? ;) One of them is a track I got from someone on my friendslist, so I'm a bit surprised it's still up for guessing...

A brief recap, in my humble opinion:

Best movie of 2005 - Kung Fu Hustle by such a long way it's not even funny. At last, a movie that completely lived up to my expectations, even if it technically isn't a 2005 movie. ;)

Best new tv series - Rome, since while we always knew what was going to happen to certain characters, Vorenus and Pullo were really the stars. Roll on season 2!

Standout music newcomers - again, up against some stiff competition, Arctic Monkeys took it for me. I'm looking forward to their debut album at the end of January.

The 'there's life in the old dog yet' award for 2005 - has to go to the reincarnation of Dr Who. Whether you like Eccleston or Tennant, you can hardly deny that it was a triumphant return of the show. Hats off to Russell T Davies, not least for creating Captain Jack and getting away with stuff that would never fly on mainstream US television. :)

Meanwhile, what's the point of cover songs that sound exactly like the original? If I wanted a song that sounds like the original, I'd... well, I'd play the original, wouldn't I?

I always thought the idea of a cover was to take the original and make it your own, not force yourself into the exact same working of it as when it turned up the first time around.

Yes, Oingo Boingo, I am looking at you and your so-called cover of 'Turning Japanese' which is apparently about masturbation though I have no idea where people got that idea from since it's a theory I'd never heard until last week and it seems a bit far-fetched to me... not convinced.
