You know, every time I end up writing Stargate SG-1 fic, I swear I spend as much time trying to figure out ingenious ways to get people stranded offworld back home without the use of a functioning GDO of their own as I do figuring out anything else. Damn canon devices. And yes, Jack and Daniel are currently stranded offworld. But at least they're together now, which they weren't (for reasons I have no intention of going into) for about the first 12,000 words.

I guess every fandom probably has things like this (and if so, please feel free to share with me what they are...), but surely I can't be alone in my vexation? Also suggestions for dealing with the GDO issue gratefully considered!

E.T.A.: it's set in season 1...

How much of their equipment was lost? If it's just what they were carrying with them, then there could be a Segan box in the MALP or the FRED.

If they don't have a Segan box handy, what about a P90? I always thought a 50 round clip would be perfect for tapping out SOS in Morse code on the closed iris. *THUMP*THUMP*THUMP* *THUMP* *THUMP* *THUMP* *THUMP*THUMP*THUMP* rinse, repeat.

If they don't have a P90, how about just throwing rocks against the iris. SOS Send GDO to SG1.

Oh, DUH! Sorry, forgot this one. Gate to 1). The Land of Light or 2). Cimmeria or 3). K'Tau. The Land of Light has a GDO, Cimmeria and K'Tau both have ways to contact the Asgard.

They pretty much have what they were standing up in, nothing more. And while Jack has access to some alien technology, it's a little too tempting to go 'oh, and guess what this doohickey does?' and have them get into the SGC that way... ;)

Is there a alpha or beta site, and do they have shields in place? Would those be acceptable second choice places to travel to as a first step to getting home? Or what about Chulak?

It's a season 1 story, so the alpha site hasn't been established yet, which seriously limits the options...

It seems to me that how to deal with the absence of a GDO depends upon what season / canon timeline you are writing within. They had various allies and various possible havens at different points in the series.

If you aren't writing within a specific canon season, well then I think you are free to do whateve he heck you want ;-).

I see up above that you have them without much more than the clothing on their backs (but, gee, why do they even have clothing? what's wrong with you?), except for having access to some alien tech you'd prefer they do not use.

All they need is something that transmits radio waves of some sort, in order to try to communicate with the SGC through an open 'gate. oooh, I got an idea ;-) ...
