A quote from the thread regarding the movie Troy, over on Our Stargate:

"As far as I am concerned, that [the homoerotic relationship between Achilles and Patroclus] is all bs anyway. A flawed interpretation by politically correct scholars. Achilles is an honorable, tough, skilled, soldierly man - one might as well say Worf or Teal'c is a homosexual as say it of Achilles. To my view, that other perspective is the one that tries to change Achilles' friendship and comradeship with Patroclus into something it isn't and wasn't."

How art thou wrong, let me count the ways? ;)

P.S. This is not an invitation to come troll the poor schmuck. Let the regulars kick him around a little first!

ETA:
And there's more! ;)

"A warrior is unlikely to be what Achilles has been misrepresented as via misinterpretation of Homer. I'd opine Achilles and Patroclus were best friends and the semantic way a Greek writer such as Homer had of recording that has been misinterpreted by modern folks from a modern perspective."

Followed by ramblings about how Spartan society made homosexuality compulsory and how "Sparta stands as a historical lesson to the future and a reason not to encourage anything more than basic minimum tolerance as a minority demographic activity, while denying encouragement rather than this mere tolerance."

Yeah, right, whatever.

Politically correct scholars like Aeschylus and his Myrmidons, eh?

Keep me informed of proceedings over on that thread, it might provide a little amusement.

Hey, *everyone* knows that the Victorians were oh so politically correct back in 1871 when Jowett was translating Plato's Symposium and banging on about how A and P were lovers... ;)

Tut, tut, the youth of today. Makes you wonder why we bothered coming down from the trees at all, doesn't it?

Ooh, there's more! Apparently encouraging people to be gay will lead to the end of civilisation (aka The United States, because nowhere else is civilised) as we know it!

And not before time, in my opinion...

Thanks for the heads up. All most entertaining, even if his arguments make little sense.

I like nonsensical bigotry, if it chases its tail for long enough it might get dizzy and fall over.

It starts here: http://forums.delphiforums.com/ourstargate/messages?msg=4789.26

And now apparently I need to go see some PBS documentary that will 'prove' how Teh Gay is so dangerous to civilisation as we know it! ;)

He *has* talked himself into a corner, hasn't he?

Then again, he hasn't gone all biblical yet.

Has anyone pointed out yet that he automatically renders any argument of his null and void by mentioning the Nazis. Or does he not know the unspoken Nazi law of the debate? *grin*

Yes, around post 52 we told him the discussion was over, because of Godwin's law and then basically changed the subject to sweaty men in leather skirts and the terrifying power of Brad Pitt's nostrils. ;)

I continue to be bemused at the way people manage to convince themselves that because they were taught that the world was *this* way by their particular family and peer group, that is the way it has ever been so, yes and amen.

I suppose it saves them the trouble of independent thinking. They get their mental workouts doing gymnastics trying to prove that black really is white.

To quote my dear friend Xochiquetzl: "The stupid! It burns!"

He was doing a lot of mental yoga, certainly, avoiding answering the question about how it was that apparently it's not possible for Achilles to be manly, honourable, soldierly and queer as a three pound note...

I note that, after getting that thorough slapping-around (including belatedly from people who came into the thread later on) he hasn't come back to reply to any of their posts refuting his 'evidence'. ;)

Yeah, those fem Spartans might have missed Marathon because they were doing their hair but they must have thrown one hell of a hissy fit at Thermopolis. And I suppose Alexander the Great and Hephaestion were just REALLY good friends. Ah-huh.

I think it started to go downhill for him when he was citing PBS and I was citing Plato... ;)

That was pretty pathetic of him. PBS, of all things. And a *blurb* on the back of video. I like PBS, too, but I don't let a TV station do all my thinking for me, either. (snorts)
