I've been using Opera as a browser for ages now, even back in the day when you had to pay for it if you wanted ad-free, and can't see that changing any time soon... I know a bunch of you guys love Firefox but I just can't get into it for a number of reasons:

  • Opera has this thing where you can just push one button and you can get rid of people's hideous lj headers, or the nasty colours they've made their website.

  • It also has the function for enlarging or reducing text there on the browser

  • And feeds. Opera 9 has a built in newsfeed reader than doesn't insist on 'live bookmarks' or whatever it is...

Yes, I'm hooked, how did you guess? ;)

Don't forget the built-in bittorrent software and widgets, which includes my favouritest widget ever (http://widgets.opera.com/widget/5040).

Not so keen on the bittorrent stuff, since I use Azureus and find that works a lot quicker, but the widgets are cool too... that one looks like a real timesuck! ;)

What's great about the aquarium widget is that you build up more money the longer the game runs, and certain fish will breed over time, so you can stick it in the background, do some work, and then you go back, and you have lots of cash and lots of fish to sell for more cash.

Ah, it amused me. Especially when I got enough for the piranha.

That is a *great* widget. I don't think I ever reinstalled my aquarium sim on this computer, and that looks like a perfect little replacement.

    {waits impatiently for $ to accumulate so I can buy plants.}

Ditto here to all of the above! I've seen some nice advantages of Firefox, and I've been tempted, but haven't switched over. And now, thanks to your post, I learn about removing headers from LJ -- how??? It's not so much that I don't want to look at them, but I'm on dial-up. I generally avoid LJs which I know use them.

And now I'm off to download the aquarium widget. :D

In my experience, you should be able to kill most of them by hitting the button for author mode/user mode (usually on the left of where the url is), as user mode will kill most of the multi-image headers people have.

And now I'm off to download the aquarium widget. :D

Another one led astray by [livejournal.com profile] katemonkey - she should be getting commission! ;)

I like Sea Monkey. This is basically the new Mozilla Suite after Netscape decided to scrap suite updates.

You can enlarge and reduce text with CTRL+ and CTRL- in Firefox. I use that option a lot.

There's a lot of plugins out there that can block various aspects on webpages too. I haven't explored them much, but I have some that will block ads as well as flash images, unless I unblock it on a site per site basis. Even though I have a higher speed connection now, I still hate having flash animation and video tossed at me when I don't want it.

I'm sure there's some for a newsfeed too, but I've never really used them, so I'm not sure.

One thing I like about Firefox is the customization possibilities. What bugs me on websites might not bother someone else, so I can pick and choose how I want the browser to work.

I'm also shamelessly using Opera to block animated gif livejournal icons, because... well, because most of them suck like a sucking thing.

I know I can block images by domain, but I haven't researched other blocking options. It's probably there, but I usually stumble upon them by accident. ;)

And there's a few animated gifs I rather like. ;)

Really? I find the idea of this feature very attractive. On LJ, I view everyone's journal entries in my own style when that's possible, but when I have to read someone else's journal style, 99% of the time it makes my eyes hurt. Even if the journal is gorgeous, I prefer easy to read. :-) The same goes for website.
