Goddamnit, why is plot so hard? Why won't the bloody characters cooperate?

Why do I have to keep biting back the 'your fic would be readable better if it wasn't one long unpunctuated spew of words that don't differentiate between speech and action?' since clearly the 'writer' has never actually read anything ever if they don't realise this without a slap round the head?

*hits Illya Kuryakin over the head*

Why, because I can! :P

Because I have fic to finish I'm currently having a clear-out of the spare room and I just found a folder full of information about job applications I made. In 1998. *facepalm*

Apparently the packrat situation is worse than I thought.

In other news, because I have accomplished something, if not yet the completion of my [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang story, I posted my [livejournal.com profile] picfor1000 - The Talented Mr Solo last week.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who looks at lj and thinks how little what they do would interest anyone else, all things considered. However, at the cost of people on my flist thinking I'm either buried under a pile of books and can't get up or have been eaten by ferrets, I thought I'd try and rectify that. Maybe I just need a meme of sufficient interest, as the fanfic one worked? Suggestions happily considered...

Work has been Insane with a capital I this week. Not helped by the people who thought it would be a good idea to turn the office into an adjunct of Santa's grotto, complete with mechanical things that play Christmas music. If I'd been within earshot of any of those on Tuesday, we'd be discussing how long the surgery is to remove such an item from someone's anatomy. Had I been asked 'what's wrong, [Graculus]?', the answer would have been 'EVERYTHING!!!111!!!!' with fists of doom. Fortunately people were not as stupendously idiotic the rest of the week and so I still have a job rather than pending assault or murder charges.

In ferret news, we still have no progress on the names front. Three weeks on and although there were some fantastic suggestions from you guys, nothing seems to particularly fit so I'm currently resigned to calling them The Lads and leaving it at that. Whenever they've been in the house and I put them out to let Buzz in, he is utterly incensed at the idea of weasels in his house and runs around rubbing his scent on everything.

In holiday news, I am off to Costa Rica in February, after my hopes of abandoning these inclement shores over Christmas got knocked on the head a while back. Don't worry, there will be photos! :)

As for other stuff, I am alternately so glad I didn't sign up for NaNoWriMo and also desperately in need of a big stick to actually make me sit down and write something. Anything. Just the idea of it makes me go running to the nearest pile of books or fic. Pffft.

Signed up for this, hope other folks will do the same if they write in a small fandom...

For some reason, all the books I've tried to read have bored me so I'm currently working my way through the Vorkosigan canon as I finally managed to get my hands on it in its entirety and I know there's damn good fic in that universe waiting for me at the end of it all. :)

I've also been writing Mag7 for [community profile] mag7daybook and my Mag7 Bingo card and the following prompts:

Dark!fic
'Trail-stained'
'Meanwhile, back at the bath-house...'
'Ancient curse'
'Scars'

In TV terms, still loving White Collar and desperately waiting on the season premiere of Fringe. *shakes fists at JJ Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci*

March already? How did that happen? I guess it's time for this month's still-not-dead post.

Anyway, I managed to get my [livejournal.com profile] picfor1000 story done on time, and was quite pleased with it, even if my plans for my [livejournal.com profile] au_bingo card before the amnesty period hit were well and truly flummoxed by my apparent inability to write alternate history for any of my fandoms. I'd written 12 stories (or at least starts of stories and I promise they will get finished at some point!) anyway, with a part-written Napoleonic era SG-1 still lurking somewhere and possibly more...

Found a bunch of old photos when I was having a clear-out, including ones of me in my 20's (rarer than hen's teeth as I hate having my photo taken) when I was both much skinnier and incredibly blonde; I remembered being the former but not the latter! Also stuff from various earlier holidays and some half-written journals accompanying those, of which I remembered some bits but not everything so that was a fun find. And yes, the clear-out is still going on; I've got a few more days annual leave to use up so that kind of excitement continues!

Book recommendation of the year so far, by the way, if it continues being as awesome as it currently is - I'm about halfway through and so far, so good - has to be The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon. It's a pleasant surprise when stuff lives up to the hype, as I'm so often disappointed in that respect.

The last week has been insane. I hadn't realised how tired I was until I shut off the alarm clock for the weekend and both Friday night and last night slept over 12 hours without any difficulty at all.

It also meant I defaulted on one of the writing exchanges I'd signed up for, which I absolutely hate doing, but there was a big hole in the middle of the story where the plot should go which wasn't going to get sorted out any time soon.

On the plus side, while dozing happily this morning, I plotted an entire AU for another square on my [livejournal.com profile] au_bingo card, one which I think [livejournal.com profile] obelix in particular will like since it's Morgan/Reid. Although I hadn't quite got to the part of feeding Reid up a little so they can knock boots more effectively... ;)

I was working on my DTC story submission and decided a good way in that I didn't like how it was working out, so I've had to use it for parts. Hmm. Deadline is next weekend, so I still think I'm in with a reasonable chance of not getting hunted for sport...

In other news, we have plenty of white stuff and temperatures which might make the Canadians reading this back off for once with their whole thing about how they have real winters etc etc etc! Yes, it's been down to -17 at night although it seems to have eased up a little and we're at least seeing sunshine. At its worst we've had about 5 inches of snow here and I was heartened to see all the shops had run out of birdfood although I think one of the urban foxes has been helping himself to the fat-based element of what I've been putting out.

Still, I managed to get to work without major problems, as I live just by a main bus-route; the main issue tended to be dragging myself out of my nice warm bed in the first place!

As a relatively new manager, I seem to be coming across all sorts of issues for the first time and hope that I will feel much more ready for them next time around: this time it's the saga of K, who is excellent when she's on top of things but is currently off work with anxiety attacks and rabid insomnia. K is one of those people who takes everything personally and is also incredibly easily knocked in terms of her confidence, so the slightest inkling of her struggling with anything sees her plummet.

I'm currently dealing with the whole 'everyone in the team hates me because I'm off when I'm not really sick' and also 'when I come back to work, anything that's done to ease my transition back is going to make me feel like I can't do the job and you don't trust me any more' issues. *headdesk*

This is kind of a generic post about things that I'm currently enjoying (YMMV):

  • An unexpected crossover love - [livejournal.com profile] gaedhal is currently writing 'A Study in Lavender', which is a Queer as Folk US/Sherlock Holmes (Guy Ritchie style) WIP based in modern-day England and California. It's pretty awesome and starts here.

  • Meanwhile, for those of the more gen persuasion, Cofax has been writing a fantastic series set in Narnia which answers the question of just how it gets to be a proper functioning kingdom with four children in charge after the fall of Jadis. You can find part 1 of 'Carpetbaggers' here.

  • For [livejournal.com profile] phantomas in particular, but also for anyone else who likes the Nero Wolfe series of books - here's the stuff from Parhelion, which I was talking about at [livejournal.com profile] connotations, at their own site (also home to some excellent original slash fic) and on AO3.

  • Over on Circlet, Cecilia Tan is posting a serialised story 'The Prince's Boy' (currently up to part 65) on a weekly basis - part 1 is here. Please note, for those of a sensitive disposition, this is gay fiction with a lot of sex of varying kinds.

  • 2D Goggles, the thrilling adventures of Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace. Together they fight crime! :P

  • Hyperbole and a Half, original home of 'Clean All the Things!'

Possibly more to come if I think of anything else, but that's surely enough to be going on with?

E.T.A. I knew there was something else! In TV news, for those fans of Anthony Starke (*waves to [livejournal.com profile] siluria*) E4 is airing Make It or Break It from ep1 this afternoon at 4pm. And FX is going to be airing The Walking Dead from Sunday 7th November.
