Everytime I think MGM/Bridge et al can't get much smarter, they go and prove me wrong!

Their latest brainwave? Well, there's a little thing called Gatecon, it's a convention based in Vancouver that's for the past 3 years had a good deal of involvement and support from the people who make the show. That means, among other things, set tours that raise money for charity.

So, imagine the surprise of people who're heading out to Gatecon this year to discover that some bright spark has decided that there will be no set tours this year. Apparently now they've struck some kind of deal with Creation to do 'official' SG cons, tptb have no intention of giving anything to Gatecon, regardless of the fact that it's for charity and that Creation don't hold a con that weekend (or any time in Vancouver, to date).

Thanks, guys, for proving us utterly and uncategorically correct in our assessment of your PR skills.

They have PR skills? I thought their PR strategy was developed by the 1000 monkeys on typewriters...

Those guys? I think they throw a dictionary down the stairs and see how it lands; they'd begrudge paying monkeys.

This whole thing fits with the way they've been dealing with the show for the last years. When you have morons in charge, things happen.

And they've managed to piss everybody in the Stargate fandom, gotta give them some credit for that.

Yep, it takes real talent to upset the entire fanbase, pretty much in one go. ;)

I know someone got into trouble last year for letting either the tours happen or for giving so much to the auction. Can't remember who of course (cause I'm an airhead today) but somehow the actions of Bridge/MGM et al just don't surprise me anymore.

Wow. More examples of their crack PR team at work, I suppose.

All I can figure is that either the Atlantis premiere is going to be so fricking amazing, it won't matter what the die-hard fans think, or it's going to be so mediocre that they're afraid to show it to said fans in public. Why else throw away an opportunity to air it to the ideal captive audience?

Taking the tour away, and thus the charity income, makes me embarrassed to be a fan. While I was planning to bid, it wasn't going to make or break my trip if I didn't win a spot. But the slap in the face of the hard-working, dedicated fans who put that convention on every year just guts me.

Thing is, they weren't going to get to see the Atlantis premiere before anyone else, just when everyone else does instead of decamping up to their hotel rooms and deserting the con (yeah, right). Makes no sense.

As for the set tour and the resultant charity impact, they suck. Simple as that.
