Someone at the office where I'm currently based has decorated her desk for Christmas. I think she did it last Friday, because it was December 1st I guess, but being of the bah humbug persuasion I was wondering just how common this kind of behaviour is. Is it more common in the colonies? ;)

I have to say, this is a woman whose desk normally is all unicorns and rainbows, so it should come as no surprise to anyone who knows her that it's now unicorns, rainbows, miniature Christmas trees and tinsel...

Tastefully, yes - meaning, just a bit. Just don't overdo it, like they do in the shops.

Every year I get more annoyed with rabid Christmas foofery. And every year my colleagues pressure me harder to participate in it and give tons of money to this and that ridiculous gift exchange/get-together budget/meal/shoeboxes of useless crap like deodorant for the unwashed heathens in somewhere third world.

Not playing at all this year. I did pin on my bulletin boards some ornaments the cow-orkers gave me last year, in hopes some student who liked them would steal them.

So far, no luck.

I have to confess I was the one who loudly asked whether we were having a Christmas Tree in reception this year or whether we were going to look like a bunch of bah-humbug scrooges like we did last year.

Two Christmas Trees appeared last Friday. One in reception, and one upstairs next to the coffee machine. Boss then paid someone to come in and decorate them!

Very nice they look too.

As for decorating desks - well, I did think the person who decorated her desk on November 20th was a raving nutter. I probably won't be decorating my desk. I am, however, seriously considering sneaking a white light reindeer onto my lawn this year.

I like decorating, though I have reservations about the admin staff's large collection of antique foil chains and balls in every colour combination imaginable [they've been putting the same stuff up for at least the last 10 years]. I also like to use these to explain to colleagues about the true meaning of Christmas - if we don't light candles and put up decorations the sun doesn't come back.

Oh and wander round on the 21st wishing everyone a Happy Solstice ... and then explaining to all those who didn't study latin what "solstice" means. Ah such fun.

I'm the one person mission to brighten up our office during the darkest part of the year.

I started with holly like tinsel (I've been asked where I got that from) and baubles along the screens dividing one group of 4 desks off from the other 17 desks last Friday lunchtime. Monday I set up my two foot high fibre optic tree on one end of my desk and decorated it with (mostly) glass baubles. Tuesday through to this lunchtime I've been putting up more holly tinsel and baubles on bookcases and shelves and on the pigeonholes etc. My colleagues reactions have been very positive (as they were in previous years when I made the effort in our old office) and a couple of visiting staff have made comments too. I'm not sure how much more decorating I should do (can't hang anything from the ceiling and have got to be careful with the security motion sensors) otherwise it would get a bit too much - then I remind myself that with the exception of the fibre optic tree I used just about everything else to go totally over the top last year when decorated our (much smaller) previous office.

The building we're in has got a real Christmas tree inside each of the entrances but other than those and my efforts I've yet to see any other signs of people decorating their workspaces.

I like some decoration, but sometimes some people can go quite overboard...

Personally the less the better. If none at all then I'm ecstatic.

One persons decoration is another persons nightmare of kitchy and frankly most holiday season decorations are kitchy ;-)

I do not decorate at the office and the only thing I put up at home, during the holidays, is a winter solstice themed wreath (with no lights) on my front door. I don't put up lights as they use power for nothing and help produce even more greenhouse gases and pollution.

Member of the Bah Humbug brigade and proud of it ;-)

I dress my size 3X orangutan in a Christmas outfit, give her a couple colorful stuffed elf-dressed companions, then don't worry about any other decorations.

Um...is that odd?

Ooh, you reminded me. I must get some new batteries to power the flashing fiber optic Christmas tree for my desk.
