Okay, so maybe that's a slight exaggeration, except that those of us with little-to-no willpower where shiny things are concerned probably shouldn't be allowed free access to sites like Amazon and Ebay.

Even when we know we will hopefully be moving house at some point in the (hopefully) near future, said websites should help us in our ongoing struggle to resist the buying of more books, cds and dvds which will only require packing along with the rest of the stuff. They really should.

BTW, I read this story and was a little boggled - anyone else around here have just the number of albums etc. quoted? That would be 178 if you're a man, 135 if you're a woman. Personally I have that in just cds, without taking into account the vinyl and the couple of boxes of cassettes I have lurking around the house, and would probably have more if I didn't have a clear out every so often...

Meanwhile, my criminal records check came back today, so that's another hurdle in my quest to new employment overcome. Considering that a goodly number of people I work with are either working their notice or are seriously thinking about giving in their notice, it's nice to be the one who's going in a proactive manner, because I'm going to something and not just running from the current situation.

I think the entire internet is a conspiracy to part me from my money.

And you probably have a much narrower field of potential products than some of us...

LOL I own a lot more CDs then 138 as you well know ;-)

And yes the internet is one huge wormhole for my pocketbook... Did I mention I finally broke down and bought a hard disk MP3 player? One that can hold 20GB of music and vids?

It's shiny, it's pretty, it's mine!

At least mine aren't alphabetised! :P

And I knew you'd succumb eventually. I can't imagine how I got along without my gizmo, particularly when I have to spend a long time driving places (like I'm going to be doing soon, for a bit anyway) - so much more convenient than cds.

My 7" singles are still in something vaguely resembling alphabetical order - okay I haven't played one of them in years but they're still in order in the cupboard.

Can't remember what order the LPs and 12" singles are in - too hot to excavate the stuff from in front of the cupboard they're stored in to have a look.

Never felt the need to put the CDs in alphabetical order - they're grouped together by type of music or origin: classical, ABBA (and related artists), Eurovision Song Contest entries, British acts, film soundtracks etc.

I've got about 400 CDs and a few more dozen just electronically on my computer.

Though far too much of my paycheck still goes to Amazon (mmmmmm... books...), the wishlist has been my savior. If I put what I want there, then I can control to urge to buy it and can keep my purchaces to a trickle (relatively speaking, anyway). Keeps the impulse buying managable.

They must have just picked the wrong people to ask, obviously. Though I've been surprised when I've visited some people's houses to see they only have a handful of cds artistically arranged in a little unit. ;)

Yep, I use the wishlist for that as well, not to mention to remember to buy stuff when it becomes available - the only problem being that I have 66 things on there so far and it seems as though every time I buy one thing, three more things get on there.

And when I see that, I also tend to see something like half a dozen books arranged artistically in another unit. It's not that the rest of the music and books are elsewhere, they just aren't. I wibble in fear at the suggestion that I cut down my music or book collection.

Okay, maybe 400 albums on CD, another 50 on tape and only around 20 on record.

If I go in someone's house for the first time, I tend to look for things like that - there's something just so sterile about houses where people don't have books, imo.

Agreed on the books. People need books. How do you learn things, give your imagination toys to play with, or just fall into another world without books? I have stuff everywhere in my house, though. Trying to find things can be like an expedition into the Amazon rainforest.

Yep, I do so agree with you. Maybe we should set up a self-help club. One that helps us spend er. stop spending money :-)

Even when we know we will hopefully be moving house at some point in the (hopefully) near future, said websites should help us in our ongoing struggle to resist the buying of more books, cds and dvds which will only require packing along with the rest of the stuff. They really should.

Now this I can truly sympathise and empathise with, as it was us for most of last year!!!! And for the three months at the beginning of this year when we were in rented accommodation pending buying our new home. Certainly when we came to repack the boxes of books and DVDs that we'd taken to the cottage, we had to find a new box to take the extras that somehow managed to sneak into the cottage.

Every time I've moved house it's always taken me way longer to pack the books and stuff than everything else. I've kind of got a headstart this time around, because I packed away a load of fannish stuff (video tapes of entire series) but it's still going to be a chore.

My love affair with buying loads of CDs pettered out before we got a computer and the joys of Amazon etc. I had got to the stage where I had almost everything I wanted to get. Okay I have bought quite a few CDs in the last 5 years but they've been out numbered by the DVDs bought.

I hate to think how many CDs, LPs and singles I own - hundreds and hundreds of them.

You probably don't want to know this but here are my firsts:

first 7" single: Spandau Ballet - Musclebound/Glow
first LP: Abba - Greatest Hits 2
first 12" single: New Order - Blue Monday
first CD: Mussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition
first DVD: either a season 2 or season 3 Stargate SG-1 DVD (can't remember exactly which one now)
I have no idea what my first boughten videotape was - probably some movie

I have a clear-out every year or so, so I have no idea how much stuff I would have by now if I didn't...
