Today, I find myself randomly amused by someone posting on a particular forum I frequent who's going 'no, I see character X like this (goes on to state the complete opposite of how everyone else sees him) and I've seen the entire run of episodes and the movie so I win the internet!!!1!!!1!!', though with less frenzied punctuation.

I hope this person does not think that this will make everyone go 'oh, what a fool I've been to believe anything different!', with the wailing and the gnashing of teeth. Reminds me a bit of those people who pop up on slash lists/communities to tell everyone that slash is wrong and Teh Ev0l and apparently think they're heralding the way for a major paradigm shift from the list members, who will as one body turn their back on the bad and icky slash. Uh huh.

*snickers*

Oh, you've had one of them as well!
I think my one takes the biscuit: not only did she say slash is bad and that we should all write het, she also tried to lead us out of the slashy darkness into the het light by rewriting the main character we wrote. Yes, because Greeks/Greek gods never had male/male sex. A-huh...

So, that blinding epiphany never happened, huh?

Inexplicably, no.

Ya know, I've seen all the episodes and the movie and read the fics -- where does that put me?
(end snark)

I've been wanting to make a reply but then I wonder if it's worth the bother. I could go off on a tangent... hmmm... variation of a theme...

Well, I've seen all the episodes and the movie and read the first lot of official books, so does that make me a better fan than you? ;)

And it looks like everyone knows what this one was except me. This is the trouble with putting people on ignore - I miss the really stupid but still entertaining posts *g*

The short version: Jack is a sarcastic macho loner who doesn't like to be touched by anyone. Oh and he's straight, as is Daniel, but that's another discussion altogether. ;)

Doesn't like to be touched? Have they watched the show? The man is the most touchy feely one on there...

I don't have a problem with people's different interpretations of character, God knows you and me and Colleen seem to be the only ones who see the obvious about Napoleon ;)
but ...

the evangelical type posts always confuse me. who exactly are they trying to convince???

I've never understood the point of going onto a slash list and then going 'this slash, it's not good, is it?' and expecting people to suddenly go 'OMG, you're right! Why didn't I realise it before I spent the past 10 years reading and writing porn and more porn!?!'.

Maybe it's just time for them to come out from under their bridge...

Yeah, I wonder about that person: but they've had a history of being contrary Just To Be Aggravating.

But they're also Right About Everything, so we must all bow to their consummate knowledge of the show since nobody else on the forum has seen all the episodes and the movie and therefore we don't know what we're talking about...

Ah but isn't it fun when they eventually throw a strop and take their ball home because no-one will play properly?

We had one who believed that not only did he know what the director and movie script writer intended but also what the original author meant - despite, as various list members pointed out politely, that the author was on record as saying he didn't mean that at all.

He disappeared because he was so rude to another list member I said all the things I had not been intending to say. [And read the post through twice before hitting send just to check the phrasing was as pointedly precise as I could manage.]

Well, my dear, you have to understand that this is interpretation of art, which is a highly scientific discipline known for it's neat deliniation into objectively right and wrong answers. If you've seen every ep, then you must have The Correct Characterization. It's a mathmatical certainty.

Ahem.

Ah, good to know that asshattery is alive and well in fandom. Because it's been at least a couple of hours since someone made a total fool of him- or herself, so I was starting to get a bit concerned.

If you ever need reminding, you need to get over to Fandom Wank. Obviously you're just not hanging out in the right fandoms (or are ignoring stuff going on) anymore?

I have to admit, I pay so little attention to my fandoms (outside of the fic) that I'd have no idea if they all simultaneously imploded. Which is precisely the way I like it, actually; that whole "interacting with other people" idea is seriously overrated.
