I've been reading some of the many many food blogs out there and on a couple of them there's been a competition recently for best comfort food. That started me thinking just what I'd consider to come into that category and realised that the list is quite a short one:

Butterscotch Angel Delight (has to be that flavour, no other will do)
Sponge pudding with syrup
Toad in the hole (though good veggie sausages are few and far between)
Tomato soup (preferably Heinz)
Baked beans on toast

So, what's your comfort food?

Boy, this took no time to think at all:
  • Annie's Mac and Cheese with veggies thrown in during the boil
  • Frosting covered saltine crackers
  • A big bowl of mashed potatoes with a bunch of stuff stirred in -- mushrooms, sour cream, tomatoes, avocados, broccoli, salsa...

    But what is Angel Delight?

Angel Delight (http://www.britsuperstore.com/acatalog/Angel_Delight_59g.jpg) is a dessert mix, something doubtless chock full of all sorts of chemicals (I don't dare look at the ingredients list!) that you mix with milk and then it sets to a kind of blancmange consistency. Real childhood food.

or if I'm really ready to regress into my childhood:

Hamburger Helper Cheeseburger Macaroni (made with veggie ground beef these days)

    Amy's Macaroni and Soy Cheese.

Also, when I'm PMSy I randomly raid the kitchen looking for any phytoestrogen-containing substance and toss it in a big dish together and nuke it. So I get things like soycheesy tofu with noodles. I'm not sure I'd call that a recipe, or that I have a name for it, though. Unless you want to call it "Xochi's Anti-PMS Phytoestrogen Delight." ;)

What is toad in the hole exactly, and why that name?

    Grilled cheese.
    Cabbage fried with bacon.
Potatoes and onions fried with bacon until the potatoes are crispy.
    My mom's sticky buns.
    Snickers bar.

    And now I am hungry.

Well, first take your toad... ;)

It's sausages baked in the same mix that you make yorkshire pudding from (basically pancake mix baked in the oven, since it's flour and eggs and milk) and it's yummy.

I'm with you on Butterscotch Angel Delight - freshly made with cold milk on a warm day :-)

My other comfort foods I can think of right now:
    - Cadbury's dairy milk
    - freshly cooked gammon

Actually, when I'm really upset, I'm more likely to turn to my bookshelf than my refrigerator. But I do have some favorite comfort foods:

Campbell's tomato soup, made with milk (grilled cheese sandwich optional)
Jell-O, especially my mother's version made with ice cream
    Homemade hot chocolate
    Cheerios
