What were the books about? Was the mini-series close to the basic storyline?

The books are fantastic, with the second one scaring the crap out of me as a teenager.

They're about the main character Ged (not a squeaky clean pseudo-surfer boy) discovering the power inside him and the consequences of mastering that power.
