16 – Summaries – Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?

Hate. Hate hate hate. Usually I will succumb to posting a line from the fic, but I'm a bit torn as I don't want to give everything away if it's a long story and the phrase '...and then hijinks ensue!' (or alternatively '...and then they had sex!') keeps battering away at my brain, wanting admittance. Meh.

Do you find yourself easily selecting a line that sums the story up, or do these tend to leave you unsatisfied? I ask because I hate summaries too, but I'll do a one-line summary of the plot rather than pull a line out, simply because there's never a line that summarizes the plot, though sometimes they can summarize the point, or theme - but even then, I don't feel like any single line does enough in that regard to do justice.

I usually cheat by just using the first line, whether or not it really works, because part of me begrudges 'giving it all away' - if I knew how the story works out then I wouldn't want to write it, so why should anyone else want to read it? ;)
