Overall, it's been an odd couple of weeks. One of those periods of time where it's only when you look back over it, you realise there's been something of a pattern to it - so much so that I'm off to see the quacks next week for an official word. I've already done the internet-diagnosis so I'm pretty sure I know what's going on, if not why (which is where the doctor comes in...), since the combination of tiredness, mood swings, almost bursting into tears for no apparent reason and feeling like everything is shit kind of point the way quite conclusively towards the D word. Someone I work with asked me if it could have been sparked off by what happened with Remus and Obi, but I just don't know - could be that, could be hormonal or who knows what?

Anyway, life and all that has spiked my reading a bit but I'm currently on book #105 since January 2007, the book in question being Every Which Way But Dead by Kim Harrison. Since my last post in early February, the tally is quite low in comparison to previous periods but shitty RL stuff will do that to you:

Lonely Werewolf Girl by Martin Millar (too much plot and sub-plot, don't care about the characters at all...)
Blood Trail by Tanya Huff (werewolves!)
Blood Price by Tanya Huff (mummies!)
Darkland by Liz Williams (fantastic book, highly recommended!)
The White Russian by Tom Bradby (interesting period, bogged down by navel-gazing overdose)
JPod by Douglas Coupland (you'll never look at Ronald McDonald the same way again...)
Before They Are Hanged by Joe Abercrombie (great 2nd book of the trilogy, can't wait for book 3!)
The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray by Chris Wooding (highly recommended)

I have a big pile of books waiting and the Easter holidays approach, so I expect to get through more...

Yes, it may well be hormonal. When I was 37 (supposedly far too young to be having menopause symptoms) I went to the doctor with the symptoms you describe and discovered I was perimenopausal (which is basically a fancy way of saying my hormones were all over the shop because of the menopause). I started taking HRT and felt like a whole new person almost immediately.

So, do ask for a blood test to check. Other symptoms include hot flushes and nights sweats (but not everyone gets those) and my personal favourite demon - insomnia.

My money is on it being hormonal, but we'll see - fortunately my clinic also has blood tests on-site so I can get blood drawn at the same time, thus reducing the wait.

I've not had the pleasure of any of the physical symptoms so far (*crosses fingers*) but I've certainly had the emotional version of hot flushes: fine one minute, almost in tears the next for no reason. It's extremely vexing.

(JPod by Douglas Coupland (you'll never look at Ronald McDonald the same way again...))

I'm intrigued. Not that I need to add to my already overflowing Books To Read shelf.

I'm not sure I'd buy it, but I've been getting my money's worth out of the library and justifying the council tax in terms of money saved on not-buying. ;)

I've still to seek out the Tanya Huff stuff. You're still reading far more than I am, I'm always surprised about how much people fit into their free time while I'm sat here wondering what the heck I'm wasting my time on! But never mind, more importantly - I hope you feel better soon! xx

I try and read at least an hour every night, in bed, so I know that wouldn't work for everyone. But I'm also a fast reader too, which helps immensely with ploughing through stuff...

The old emotional thing comes and goes, so I'm hoping that the doc can at least say 'yes, you're hormonal, now have some more chocolate!' or 'you're going crazy, have 6 months off work!'. Either of those sound good! ;)

It does sound like it might be that. I hope the "quacks" you're seeing will give you the answers/peace of mind you need to hear.

As for your book list, I'm very intimidated. LOL. I'd been buying books but not reading as fast as I used to. Which annoys me, but does mean more motivation to get as close to 100%. I miss curling up with a book. Heck, i miss multi-tasking...

I think you're doing fantastically well to be where you are, but I bet it's frustrating too. Now you've just slowed down to where the rest of us can keep up with you! ;)

If the days weren't getting longer I'd blame "WHERE'S THE FUCKING SUN???" syndrome. But yes, there could be something hormonal going on. Monophasic birth control pills were a huge help. I still eat a nice tofu dinner whenever I'm down, for the phytoestrogens.

I hope you feel better soon.

This winter/spring has been no worse than any other, but I've certainly not had this kind of crazy mood-swing before, even when I was Crazy Hormone Girl as a teenager (and I really was, I'm surprised I didn't kill someone/myself). If it's my bastard hormones I will not be amused.

Totally unrelated but...

Lassie! I used "thinky thoughts" in a fic and people commented on it. The fic and the term, that is. And I, of course, said I heard it from you. The term, that is, not your actual "thinky thoughts". Yes, so, I wish to give proper credit. Did you coin "thinky thoughts"? Either way, I've attributed it to you. :-D

I'm not sure 'thinky thoughts' is mine or where I picked it up from (possibly [livejournal.com profile] moonlettuce?) any more than 'alien ass-babies' is, so don't worry about credit... :)
