Back for the results of the blood tests and guess what? I'm perfectly healthy. Yep, except for the chronic pain/numbness/tingling in my hands and wrists and the way my feet have swollen over the past couple of weeks. Uh huh. Not anaemic, liver and kidneys working fine, thyroid in excellent condition.

Anyway, after dropping a few unsubtle hints about my weight I got given a course of anti-inflammatories and a referral to the oedema clinic, just in case. I asked what that involved and got a shifty and evasive 'just some tests' so I expect it's not pleasant. I'm sure my weight doesn't help, but I can't see why it would affect anything quite so suddenly...

But still, I guess it was bound to catch up with me in the end, considering I've lived a relatively sedentary life (at least for the last 15 years) and had an unseemly love of ice cream for a while now without ever troubling a set of scales. In fact, I had to actually go out and buy some. Yes, I am officially on a diet (other than the seafood diet!) for the first time in my life. *sighs* I have to say, though, I fully intend this to be the last time I mention that fact here, because you really don't want to hear me whining about salad, do you? ;)

Well, I decided that I would try smaller portions, more fruit and veg (I don't mind salad, really, as long as it's not all iceberg lettuce!) and no cake/biscuits/chocolate/ice cream during the week and see how that works for me. I can't bear the thought of doing it any other way...

Iceberg lettuce is evil and should be banned from any salad, it has no taste and it goes limp and brown in minutes so I completely agree ;-) I tend to eat a lot of salads but most of mine are made with quinoa or wheatberries or wild rice or spinach/endives/fennel bulbs/romaine lettuce/mesclun mix and lots of veggies and/or fruits and nuts (roasted pine nuts hmmmmm). I rarely have just a plain old salad.

One thing I was told by my doctor and the nutritionist is that it's better to eat smaller portions often during the whole day then eat bigger portions 3 times a day or less, so I think that what you are planning is probably the best.

*hugs*

I just need to be more organised and avoid the office at work where they keep the chocolate bars... ;)

Do you drink a lot of diet cola (containing aspartame/nutrasweet)? Because that's one thing that can cause numbness and tingling in the hands, and that most doctors aren't going to note.

Nope, I very rarely drink any fizzy drinks and certainly not the diet versions... bleurgh! ;)

I need to come up with some sort of excerise for the winter. I've always been into hiking, so getting enough excerise during the warmer months is no issue, but I do absolutely nothing in the winter. I can't stand the cold. All inside excerise sound incredibly boring to me. I have no interest in sit ups!

I think the key to dieting is allow yourself all the treats you like, just not as often. Schedule them so you have something to look forward to. I think all "I will never ever eat ice cream again" diets are bound to fail.

Hey, I think part of the problem is that I've been eating for two but without the usual excuse... ;)

And I'd rather curl up and die than have to say 'I will never eat ice cream again' - what would be the point of living?

I keep deciding to go on a healthy eating kick because I actually like fruit and veg and grains and all that nonsense so it would be no hardship -- but the food prep is always my undoing...that and Thorntons, damn their eyes!

I actually like salads with darker greens quite a lot. The lighter lettuces are useless, nutrition and taste wise. :)

I think it's not necessarily a bad idea to bring things here - it could help when it becomes more trying to stick to your diet modifications to have a place to vent a little and/or ask for support.
