Watching Behind the Mythology of Stargate SG-1 on Youtube (you can find part 1 here) and trying not to choke from laughing at it.
First off, could Brad Wright get any more fawning over someone in particular (no prizes for guessing who)? [To avoid nausea, just skip the last minute or so of part 1] Oh lord, they actually mentioned the movie! But it doesn't have that special someone without whom everything is pointless, so does it really count? *sends sympathetic vibes towards the SG:A parts of her flist, who will soon appreciate this even more*
Secondly, what's with the '8 long and exciting seasons'? Did nobody notice this minor continuity gaffe considering that they're showing scenes from season 10 in the actual show? I guess we shouldn't expect much more in terms of continuity though... Still, I guess if you pull out the entirety of season 6 and various crappy episodes along the way ('Avenger 2.0', I'm looking at you!) then I guess you probably get about 8 good seasons' worth. ;)
Thirdly, what is Mallozzi doing spouting off about what the Jaffa were meant to be? He wasn't even involved with the show for another three seasons! Jeez.
Well, isn't that a telling statement from TIIC? First they decided the Goa'uld were too powerful, so they created the Asgard as some kind of balance to that, but then why haven't the Asgard wiped out the Goa'uld? Erm, because it's not their way? Nope, it's because there's something even more powerful out there, in the shape of the replicators! I wonder if this line of thought continues... hey, the Ancients are more powerful than the replicators, but what if we have evil Ancients, surely they'd be even more powerful still? *headdesk*

Date: 2007-04-15 09:34 am (UTC)The Sam Luv was totally embarrassing. She's everything, she's all the other characters combined, she's so hard to write for. What a lil' fanboy he is.
I'm so glad Shanks is getting out there and working for people who won't be as petty as the boys at Bridge.

Date: 2007-04-15 09:41 am (UTC)Who knows. Maybe the problem is that of all the characters, BW had the least to do with who Daniel is. Because the Jack of the series is unlike the Jack of the movie, whereas the Daniel of the series is a logical progression and therefore not stamped with 'property of BW' all the way through?

Kind of makes you wonder why they bother having any other characters on the show, if she's so gosh-darned special and all-knowing? At least they're consistent with their fawning though. Oh, and she's a woman! Wowee, I'd have never have guessed that if you hadn't told me, even with the wonderbra years. ;)

And long may he get shedloads of work. :)

Date: 2007-04-15 01:19 pm (UTC)Was it Michael Greenburg who left after the third season? I hope Mr. Shanks contacts him for introductions!

Date: 2007-04-15 01:25 pm (UTC)And it was Jonathan Glassner who left, which must have helped with MS getting a guest role on CSI: Miami, since that's where JG is currently hanging his hat...

Date: 2007-04-15 03:24 pm (UTC)I don't think Glassner had anything to do with MS guest starringon CSI: Miami. I vaguely recall an interview with MS where he said something about being on the set and Glassner recognized him and didn't realize he'd been cast in the episode.

Date: 2007-04-15 03:09 pm (UTC)Greenburg left when RDA did, because they're co-producers. From what I understand, Greenburg was the producer who was on the set the most, dealing with issues as they came up.

Date: 2007-04-15 03:22 pm (UTC)That was downright embarrassing to watch. I mean, I know TPTB think the sun shines out of Sam's ass, but Wright was practically getting a woody over her onscreen.
And you're right, the line of thought regarding progression of enemies is correct. They pull out a deus ex machina, and ::poof:: the current baddie is dispatched, but then they need a new Big Bad who can kick the ass of the deus ex machina, and so it goes.
The special itself was far more balanced than any they've done previously, other than the one case of worshiping at the altar of Sammikins. At least they didn't have some of TPTB slamming their characters/actors.
I did sort of zone out when they got to the Ori part. Yes, that may have allowed them to be more "topical" about religious extremism, but IMO, they never really did anything with that aspect other than a vague "extremists are bad."
It was also not "real" mythology in the sense of the Egyptian, Celtic, Norse and other myths used. The Ori were TPTB's own mythical creation, so they could make up the rules as they go. Even the dabbling in Arthurian myth didn't require much in the way of research. They took the stargate out of Stargate and replaced it with spaceships, while they took out the ancient myths and replaced them with their own.
It was refreshing not to have AT as host or co-host, and she didn't make up the majority of clips. I thought Chris and Michael did a very good job. I was sort of amused that it seemed like Chris was slipping in and out of "Teal'c voice" every once in a while. ;)

I did catch this part (or part of it anyway), and it made me laugh. I always thought that Fair Game was one of their first big mistakes on the series and it went downhill from there. *g*

Date: 2007-04-15 05:38 pm (UTC)Unfortunately, I could see the hymn in praise of St. Sam coming as soon as he started talking about O'Neill as a soldier. I can't even begin to describe how much I dread her arrival on SGA.
I didn't stay in the room for the whole thing, but it made me realize how Goauld-like TIIC are. The Goauld steal people's bodies to use as hosts and claim Ancient technology as their own. TIIC cherry-picked bits of mythology from other cultures and based their series (including the two main characters) on a movie created by someone else.
I wonder why they ran this special, though. Wouldn't it make more sense to promote *Atlantis*, the continuing show, to boost its ratings? I wonder if it was a last-minute special order from SciFi to try to get as much ratings juice out of SG-1 as they can (which would explain the continuity errors and their heavy reliance on text -- if they spliced together unused footage from earlier specials and paid Shanks and Judge for a day to tie all the bits together). We know that SciFi doesn't care about Atlantis -- their PR department can't even be bothered to spell the lead character's name right in the promos...

Date: 2007-04-15 06:51 pm (UTC)I'm starting to think Sci Fi can't tell the difference between SG-1 and Atlantis. They've both got a gate, ergo it's all the same. The kicker was when they were advertising an Atlantis marathon (including a big ad on their website), but showed SG-1 episodes. Twice.
I think the move of Sam over the Atlantis is partly because TPTB are in love with the character and actress, but also a move on Sci Fi's part to merge the shows into one entity. "Have your cake and eat it too" translates to "Cancel one show and alter the other be more like it, just cheaper."

Date: 2007-04-15 06:03 pm (UTC)I haven't watched either the special or the new show. I told my Guy to go ahead and watch it without me. I wasn't interested. I could hear it from the bedroom, though, and I can tell you, it *sounded* beyond stupid. I think he turned it off about halfway through. I'm not sure. I didn't ask.
