graculus: (flawless)

So, I'm trying to finish the bloody SG-1 novel and thought I had a nice neat way to finish it all figured out but I just needed to check some details with an early episode (we're talking season 1, in case anyone was wondering, since Daniel and Jack needed to visit a particular planet for a particular reason) only to find that something in canon means I can't quite do what I wanted.

Because now I know what I want to do breaches canon, I just can't feel happy about writing the storyline like I wanted because if I know it's messed up then other people will as well. Well, that just happens to be the way I feel about it, what do you think? ;)

::raises hand:: Unabashed canon whore here, who possibly cares about it more than the production teams on half the shows she watches... [/bitter] I can see where you're frustrated, because the end was in sight, but let it percolate just a bit more, and you'll figure a way to get to where you want to be that stays in-canon, I'm confident of that!

Continuity? What's that? ;)

Label it AU, make a knowledgeable author's note, and run with your idea. Doing things canon didn't explore is what fanfic is for.

But it's not AU, it's just wrong! ;)

The detail, that is, because technically the overall story is AU but my definition of AU does not include ignoring inconvenient canon. Writing round it, yes, but not ignoring it. Because if I know it's wrong, then someone else will, and that's Bad.

That's what the author's note is for. "Regarding (wrong canon)? That was deliberate, you bloody nitpickers. It's part of the purpose of the story. Now sit back and enjoy it!"

Yerk. I hate those kinds of authors notes, because they just yell 'lazy writer!' for me. But YMMV (and probably does!). ;)

LOL. Suit yourself, but if your opinion is this firm already, why the need for a useless poll? So you can laugh at us nitwits that disagree with you?

*ding ding ding* ;)

Prevarication. And wondering how many other people would tie themselves in knots this way, but I'm not alone! Woohoo!

*g* You already know the answer, you just don't want to come up with another idea, or a different way of achieving a similar end, do you? The majority of people won't care, but you'll always regard the story as flawed.

Fix it so you can get the ending you want without breaking canon. You won't be happy with the story otherwise. Or break canon, and accept that you will never really be happy with the ending. Which will piss you off more after all that work?

So that's where the hive mind went. :)

Yep, I think that's how I feel - I would always know it was a major bodge, even if nobody else did...

err.. We are talking Stargate right? The show where the writers have mangled canon so badly that anything resembling continuity as been forever lost and the whole shoe is a series of AU! That show?

However if you are badly bothered by it then maybe there is a way around it or a different path you can take?

This is one of those 'if A then B' scenarios. If I want to use the set-up to do A, then I can't complain if I also have to do B, even if I don't want to do B because it's a pain in the mik'ta. *grumps*

I'll figure it out when I get there - at present we're en route. ;)

Psst. If you've got a moment, could you just snip a nice screencap of Daniel from 'Orpheus' for me? I've got all the other pics for s7 but my one of my usual sources is offline and I can't find anything... :)

Sending you a zip file with a selection of caps from the beginning of the episode ;-)
