I was a little surprised to see someone comment about their use of the 'old-fashioned' vcr in a post, so I was curious about what people get up to now. If you want to watch a tv show later, what's your poison?

I haven't quite figured out my DVD recorder, because I haven't had a chance to sit down and read the book. I can do the basic record, but I usually have to be here to start it, since the 'timer' function is one of the things I haven't figured out.

So I still use the VCR for that, and for anything I just want to watch and don't want to keep.

I think, once I figure out the DVD thing though, I'll probably go with that. Mostly because dvds take up so much less space.

Alas, I don't own any of the above when I'm at school, so I rely on other people's and download an episode if I can't watch it live. At home, though, we still use VCRs and a set of tapes that are old enough to get their learner's permit.

I still use a VCR simply because I haven't got the funds to upgrade to anything else. I don't use it often, at that. I usually just watch in real time, or don't watch at all.

90% of my tv watching these days is stuff I download or DVDs I buy.

Spanish TV is plain awful, the few shows we watch (mostly on the catalan channel), we watch live. We only tape a cops show we watch the day skipping the ads. The vcr was purchased in 1993, but using it only once a week makes its live longer.

I use Comcast's terrible DVR (randomly pixilates and freezes up), bittorrent, and a DVD player/recorder, but I still want to build a Myth Box.

VCR for things recorded from TV (we have a DVD recorder, but haven't really started to use it).

DVD player for stuff DL'ed to computer and burnt to DVD.

TiVo is my best friend these days. I honestly don't know how I managed to watch TV before we had a TiVo. It's so convenient to be able to let a show record for 20-25 minutes so that we can skip thru all of the commercials if we want to watch "in real time." And not once in the two years that we've had the service have we had a show not be recorded. Even if our power goes out, as soon as it comes back on the TiVo automatically starts back up and begins recording whatever was in progress, so we only miss a tiny bit (rather than the entire rest of the program, like we would with a VCR.)

Our VCR is collecting dust in our closet now. I'm not quite sure why we even have it at this point, since I've thrown or given away all of our VHS tapes.

VCR if I can be bothered. Or wait for it to be repeated.... or for it to become available some other way. There are even a few shows that I never got to see on TV but finally caught up with once they came out on DVD.

I always watch TV with the Tivo. Even if I'm watching it "live" I watch through the Tivo, so that I can pause it if I have to get up for whatever reason. I rarely watch anything live, though. I record everything and watch it when I feel like it. If it's a really cool show that I want to watch semi-live, I always always end up starting it 10 - 15 minutes late so that I can skip over the commercials.

I have a DVD recorder that can be programmed to record a specific show, but I've never done that. I just use it to burn DVDs of show I already have on the Tivo, if I decide they're worth saving.

P.S. I watched very little TV before we had a Tivo. I used a VCR to record shows and with only one VCR and no easy way to get it to change channels, I was pretty much limited to one show--and that's all I could handle anyway. *g* At most, I watched maybe two shows a week.

The reason I ended up getting a Tivo was Stargate. When I started watching the show, there were reruns every weeknight at 6 p.m., Monday night stacks (four more episodes), an odd repeat on Fridays followed by the new episodes and/or repeats of the new episodes, plus the episodes in syndication. It was a nightmare to try to keep track of those with a VCR. It was impossible, really.

DVD recorder. NTL don't have a PVR as yet, but once they do I'll use both that and my DVD recorder and be able to record a couple of things at the same time without staring at Digiguide for ages trying to figure out what combination of days and programmes will mean I don't have to miss Spooks or ReGenesis or Eureka this week.

Don't have a DVD recorder (yet) and wouldn't get TIVO because I'd just end up stockpiling more stuff that'll take me years and years to watch *g*

I've had issues with the VCR since we got the sky box (which is...um...probably getting on for ten year ago, I guess) which means I have trouble getting it to do what I want. So unless I *really* want to watch something I just wait for stuff to repeat, or buy it on DVD. Some day, when prices come down and we are rich, I'll be buying a DVD-HD recorder.

DVD-HD recorder. It's easy to use, I can store up to 24 hours of programming at XP or more at SP and can then burn the episodes I want to keep.

If I miss something or catch up to a show later then it's download all the way, bittorent is my friend ;-)

Actually, I'm only doing BitTorrent for everything these days; not watching any live TV at all, much less recording. (Of course, it helps that I only watch 2 shows. When I can be bothered to watch those -- which isn't often, sadly.)

At the moment I don't have any broadcast reception, so the two ways I see TV are either through commercial DVDs (some bought, some borrowed) or through downloads. Since it takes me about 20 hours to download the average 45-min episode on my dial-up, I have to really, *really* want to see something *cough*DoctorWho*cough* to go that route.

I'm also in the process of converting my VHS tapes to DVD, and otherwise moving toward DVD technology. I have a lot of time and space and money invested in VHS, so it wasn't until a) I felt that the DVR formats had settled down (Betamax, anyone?) and b) I saw a definite trend of VCRs and VHS media being phased out of stores that I decided it was time to make the switch.

It's going to be an interesting process. I have a lot of tapes that are 20+ years old, and I'm concerned about what kind of quality I'm going to get on the copies. Still, my very oldest tapes aren't all that bad, even if Turlough and the Doctor do look a bit like they've been punched hard in the face.

Wouldn't it just be easier to find some kind person on your friendslist to send them to you? ;)

And poor Turlough...

I was driven to downloads because a pal of mine gave me the whole run of the new series, but the disc containing "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances" didn't take. I couldn't stand the suspense. :)

Speaking of poor Turlough, I'm reading the novel King of Terror right now. It's Turlough's third chapter, and he's just gotten completely shit-faced, let himself get picked up in the bar by a chick who drugged him with truth serum, and now seems to be destined for painful experimentation. Business as usual, in other words. ;)

My VCR, or my friend's (she gets SciFi and I don't, so she tapes stuff for me) but also a little watch it or miss it, if there's a conflict. The stuff I must watch gets a slot in the timer record menu. The rest...if I miss it, it's okay.
