I was a little surprised to see someone comment about their use of the 'old-fashioned' vcr in a post, so I was curious about what people get up to now. If you want to watch a tv show later, what's your poison?

Date: 2006-10-11 03:12 pm (UTC)So I still use the VCR for that, and for anything I just want to watch and don't want to keep.
I think, once I figure out the DVD thing though, I'll probably go with that. Mostly because dvds take up so much less space.

Date: 2006-10-11 03:49 pm (UTC)Spanish TV is plain awful, the few shows we watch (mostly on the catalan channel), we watch live. We only tape a cops show we watch the day skipping the ads. The vcr was purchased in 1993, but using it only once a week makes its live longer.

Date: 2006-10-11 04:39 pm (UTC)Our VCR is collecting dust in our closet now. I'm not quite sure why we even have it at this point, since I've thrown or given away all of our VHS tapes.

Date: 2006-10-11 05:55 pm (UTC)I have a DVD recorder that can be programmed to record a specific show, but I've never done that. I just use it to burn DVDs of show I already have on the Tivo, if I decide they're worth saving.

Date: 2006-10-11 06:00 pm (UTC)The reason I ended up getting a Tivo was Stargate. When I started watching the show, there were reruns every weeknight at 6 p.m., Monday night stacks (four more episodes), an odd repeat on Fridays followed by the new episodes and/or repeats of the new episodes, plus the episodes in syndication. It was a nightmare to try to keep track of those with a VCR. It was impossible, really.

Date: 2006-10-12 12:24 am (UTC)I'm also in the process of converting my VHS tapes to DVD, and otherwise moving toward DVD technology. I have a lot of time and space and money invested in VHS, so it wasn't until a) I felt that the DVR formats had settled down (Betamax, anyone?) and b) I saw a definite trend of VCRs and VHS media being phased out of stores that I decided it was time to make the switch.
It's going to be an interesting process. I have a lot of tapes that are 20+ years old, and I'm concerned about what kind of quality I'm going to get on the copies. Still, my very oldest tapes aren't all that bad, even if Turlough and the Doctor do look a bit like they've been punched hard in the face.

Date: 2006-10-13 03:02 am (UTC)Speaking of poor Turlough, I'm reading the novel King of Terror right now. It's Turlough's third chapter, and he's just gotten completely shit-faced, let himself get picked up in the bar by a chick who drugged him with truth serum, and now seems to be destined for painful experimentation. Business as usual, in other words. ;)
