Had lunch with [livejournal.com profile] rivier yesterday, sadly cut short by my need to get back to work for supervision (and thus sadly also booze-free for me and booze-lite for [livejournal.com profile] rivier) where she again tried in a futile manner to persuade me I needed to join the big shiny fandom of suckitude.

Not. Going. To. Happen.

HAH! We don't need you, beyotch! We have so many *real* BNFs writing in our sparkly frothy little fandom these days, we have all the cheap crackheaded goodness a body could desire!

Anyway, you'd only be disappointed: Rodney wears clean underpants. And washes his hair at least 1500 times a year more than... certain fandoms' Beloved Desired Objects.

So how did the assessment go?

Besides which, not being part of the blessed circle jerk, how could I ever compete? ;)

As for my supervision, well it was a terrible anti-climax. But I smile and think of the money (or at least I will when they eventually pay me!).

Don't join any fandom you feel uncomfortable with. It's not worth it and you can always get friends with fans without the whole fandom thing. :)

Poor, deluded [livejournal.com profile] rivier, she tries her best but it doesn't get her anywhere. I'm not *that* easily led, despite all the rumours to the contrary. ;)

I think someone's mistaking me for giving a tinker's toss about who's in any fandom I'm in. I mean, I've been an Andromeda fan for years, I'm hardly the Proselytiser General.

Pffft. I remember you wittering on at great length concerning Andromeda, it's just that your fandoms of choice don't seem to be contagious where I'm concerned. ;)

No need to join the big shiny fandom of suckitude as long as you don't mind other people waxing enthusiastic about McShep. Not that I'm waxing, mind, just... er...

Must rec some SG-1 fic. Yes. That's what I must do.

Should we circle the wagons? Seems like everyone around me is into the new shiny, everywhere I go, there is nowhere safe anymore!

It's almost as bad as Firefly ;-)

Should we circle the wagons?

Please? My oldest friend from back home has fallen in lovely with SGA, and while the only fringe benefit is that she's showing interest in SG-1 after 8 years of me being here (*facepalm*), she's still trying to get me to join.

But I survived RPS and LOTR. I will not get sucked in. :)

LOL I'm in the wagon circle too!!!

at least my friends understand the futility of attempting to drag me into shiny new fandom.

Your determined Illya icon looks quite like he's doing something else...

This isn't the first fandom of suck [livejournal.com profile] rivier has tried to pimp me into, but as yet she has not succeeded in any...

And as for IK, I guess it depends on what he's determined about. ;)

From: [identity profile] katyabaturinsky.livejournal.com
Eh, I never bother to pimp -- probably because I'm just too darned lazy (I know, it's a shock *g*). If you don't like McKay, there's nothing I can do to convince you otherwise. And if you don't like McKay, why on earth would you bother watching? Because really, the scripts suck like the galaxy's biggest space Hoover. They insult my intelligence on a weekly basis. Fortunately we have smart fan authors to fix all that, bless them.

And then there are the retarded fan authors like me, who just like the whole show and don't feel overly concerned that it isn't bloody Dostoyevsky. But then again, where's this wonderful academically impeccable fandom that I seem to have missed?

Eh, back to the silly fluffy candytuft crackporn I go.

Time to up the meds again, dearie? ;)

That or the crackporn is making you jumpy at the moment, one or the other... poor Colleen is *never* satisfied (are you, love?), so don't you get your knickers knotted over imagined slights to the shinyness.

Hello? You're talking to people where one of their fandoms has a major character dancing with a gorilla as part of their canon. Top that, Bridge boys!

heh, what is this word to which you refer?

From: [identity profile] katyabaturinsky.livejournal.com
Yeah, not so much -- well, I'm often satisfied with the fic (really, some of it is amazing); but the show itself, no. But then again, I'd be lost without something to whinge on about, so I should just enjoy the opportunities presented, really.

I tell you, it's so much easier when dealing with dead fandoms. No waiting on tenterhooks every week, wondering if your canon is going to lift you to the heights of joy or piss all over you...the tension is killing me. ;)

Well. There was certainly no insult meant, though clearly much was taken. And you may not care to hear this, given that it is coming from me, but you are one of the many, many smart SGA fanfic authors to whom I was referring. Which would be why I am in this fandom in the first place -- because the fic is so compelling, entertaining, beautifully written, and, often, downright hot. I happen to like a lot of the "silly fluffy candytuft crackporn"; I also like much of the not-so-silly, yet equally brilliant, fic in SGA, and I am very pleased (and thankful) that so many talented authors are writing all of it so well.

I am glad that you are enjoying the show so much, and I think most of the members of the fandom would agree with you wholeheartedly. Obviously I would not count myself among that group, but then again, I have never liked any of the source material in my fandoms as much as I like the fic that it inspires. I can understand the enjoyment of SGA just fine from a fannish perspective; the banter and bickering between the characters is a lot of fun, the acting is generally terrific, and there are often wonderful moments in the eps that provide great material for fanfic. (Plus, I'm pretty shallow, and would basically be happy to watch David Hewlett reading aloud from the phone book.) But on a non-fannish level, I am bothered by the show's plot holes, gaps in logic, lack of originality, and inconsistency between the episodes; enough so that it ruins my overall appreciation of the show itself.

Personally I'm damned glad SGA is not bloody Dostoevsky, as I always thought he was a bit of a pretentious bore. And I have no doubt that, were I ever unfortunate enough to encounter such a creature as a "wonderful academically impeccable fandom," it would be equally unbearable. However, I don't think that I'm necessarily committing some terrible fannish faux pas when I wish for tighter, smarter, more interesting and original scripts from my fannish shows, and then express dissatisfaction when I am disappointed. I don't believe that SGA is complete dross, or I wouldn't bother watching; but I do think it could be, and is capable of being, much, much better. (Just as a start, canonical variations of [livejournal.com profile] minnow1212's Necessary Things, [livejournal.com profile] troyswann's Owl Eyes, [livejournal.com profile] auburnnothenna's The Taste of Apples, and your Exigencies would do quite nicely.)

Duude. I witter about everything. I just don't get a chance to witter about fannish things to the girls at the office, incase they have me sectioned.

What can I say? I have no drums to bang. I like what I like, that's the end of it.

It could be worse. It could be Firefly. Or Lotrips. Or many other equally scary things. Jeez, you're making me almost feel warm and fuzzy about your fandom choice, so I'm going to shut up now! :P
