You know, I really don't remember filling in as many forms and/or providing anything like as much documentary evidence of who I am and whether I have the right to take up a job in this country when I got my previous post almost 7 years ago.

I guess that's bureaucracy for you - paperwork expands to fill any available space...

I keep being told to bring my passport with me to interviews - it still feels like a very odd request.

I've had yet another request of sight of it, yet they have already seen it at my interview and again when my criminal records check was done. Still, ours is not to reason why, ours is just to photocopy it and send the dozen forms they want.

If the paperwork continues to grow at this weight, if I go for another job in 6 or 7 years time I'm going to need a wheelbarrow for all the forms... ;)

Once upon a time, we only needed our driver's license and social security card OR a passport to show the human resources people for them to put with the I-9 forms proving we were US citizens.

I think I filled in about 8 different forms this weekend for a variety of things and I've just emailed them asking that they let me know if I missed anything out... ;)

Your passport? Wow.
Could it be some kind of anti-terrorism security protocol they've started?

It's something to do with the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996, apparently.

I wrote them myself, in crayon, since they wouldn't let me have anything sharp! :P

We have a list of things to be used to prove to the town that you are who you say you are. Number one is either a passport or a military ID (the point being, I think, that if you have either of these, you've proven to the US gov't that you are who you say you are.)

We have an absolute ditz who "runs" (and that's giving her way too much credit) our office. I have hired kids who brought in their passport to prove who they are, and she STILL makes them bring in their high school photo ID, their social security card, and their birth certificate. If they're over 16, she asks if they'll bring their driver's license too.

I've tried and tried to explain it to her, I've pointed out where it says in writing that they only need that one form of ID, but here is no arguing with her. She's right, and that's it.

She copies the documents and puts them in their personnel files. Personally, I think that's bordering illegal, but obviously, I don't get a say.
