Wanted - touristic advice-type stuff
Mar. 9th, 2003 06:45 pmWell, it seems not content with a trip to sunny Ottawa (I hope it's going to be sunny, anyhoo) in the near future, I'm off to Atlanta later on this year.
So, any advice from those who've been on must-see places in Atlanta and environs?
P.S. How come it's cheaper to fly to Atlanta in August than it is to fly to Ottawa in May?

Date: 2003-03-09 03:10 pm (UTC)Well, off the top of my head, there is a museum, a nice botanical garden (see again "hot in August," however), Underground Atlanta, Margaret Mitchell House, the Jimmy Carter museum, the Martin Luther King house, and Stone Mountain (which might be downright surreal for an English person). There's also where the Olympics were, etc.
Maybe I should explain what Stone Mountain is. It's an enormous chunk of exposed granite that was a holy site for the native Americans that was turned into a huge Confederate monument, complete with bas-relief carvings of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee, and Lt. General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson carved into the side. http://www.stonemountainpark.com/
Unfortunately, Atlanta was burned to the ground during the Civil War so if you're looking for really old stuff, there's not a lot older than that.
My mother-in-law was raised in Atlanta; she can probably come up with more suggestions.
