When installing a false wall, with associated skirting boards etc., it is not usually considered good practice to install the new skirting boards after the carpet has been laid, thus rendering it impossible to pull up without the aid of a stanley knife.

Heh - you got a false wall too? With mine it appears that the previous owners discovered a leak in the roof, and rather than fix it they decided to hide it instead. Now I have a chimney breast with alcoves either side containing my bookcases - much better. :)

Yep, they put one in when they installed a bathroom upstairs and used some of the front bedroom to do so. I hope they didn't pay too much to have the work done, because frankly it's pretty poor.
