So, they said "If we decide not to offer you the job, we'll let you know straight away, so if you don't hear anything that means we're taking up references."

Now, considering we went from closing date to interview in about 10 days, is it unreasonable of me to assume that not having heard anything so far (4 days and counting) is good?

I really hope so, after what happened this week. One of my colleagues, conscientious but not very organised, had a complaint made against him. The complaint was then investigated by someone who had clearly already made up their mind what had happened - the resulting decision was appalling in its partisanship and outright libel of my colleague and his capability to do the job.

Though I've always been a believer in 'same shit, different place', I don't want to work for these people any more.

Yeah, me too. I'm at the point now where I just want to know either way so people will stop asking me if I've heard anything... ;)

Yep, I reckon that's a good sign. Fingers crossed for you. As for your current place of employment - sounds like you're working for morons too.

I work for local government, therefore the presence of morons is a given. ;)

Yeah, we were all really steamed on his behalf - poor guy has already had one heart attack scare in the past 12 months, so he really doesn't need the hassle. :(

I'd keep my fingers crossed, but it makes it too difficult to type!

Keeping my fingers crossed but it does sound good. Seems like you've at least made the short list.
