Well, it had to happen eventually. I lost my tolerance and posted on the subject of the Golden Age of Fandom - for those not on the list in question, here's my comments so you'll know why I'm jumping up and down over being chargrilled... *g*

This post came out of a thread on betas and editors and why such things are good/bad/unnecessary/evil newfangled nonsense yadda yadda yadda.

My main concern about this kind of topic is that it often seems to be the result of a Golden Age of Fandom view of the world. I don't believe that, way back when, all zines were perfect and all stories wonderful and everyone was nice to one another - I've seen some of those zines and stories and heard the tales of people's behaviour in fandom and it ain't so.

Those of us who've come to fandom since the 'Net was invented are often arbitrarily labelled as a variety of things (mostly negative): we're supposed to care less about characterisation and quality of writing, we're lazy and desperate for feedback, we're thoughtless and impulsive, etc etc. I think that it's only that fandom is so much bigger now, communication is much faster and the morons are less easy to avoid - not that the morons haven't always been with us.

Personally, I'm pretty sick of being labelled this way by default (and the whole nostalgic BS).

And now the flames... *eg*

It was bound to happen.

I'm currently struggling with restraining myself from volunteering for the obligatory 'The Internet is killing fandom' (or however it's phrased this time around...) panel at Eclecticon. Barely.

I would, but I'm not sure how to get that and the necessary supplies through Customs.

Well, I guess you could purchase them over here... we're not complete heathens. We still know how to treat with Lollards.

Er. Assuming Eclecticon is over here...

Lollards

Well there's an IKEA nearby and I can bring a whip!

The whip is optional - it's the kindling and the pitch that are the difficulty. Good barrels (Lollards for the burning of) are hard to find as well.

I don't recall Ikea stocking generic martyring materials last time I visited.

It's the scary Starsky chest-hair, I think. Did I ever mention that Hutch looks equally scarily like my brother? (who is also called Ken)

I believe you did! Very creepy. As NS looks eerily like my dad. Not a bad thing in all but eerie none the less.

Starsky has chest hair???
... Oh wait that's the front of him... sorry, don't usually notice that part :)

Oh go on... you want to!

I just have this feeling that I'd turn into the 'I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it any more!' guy and while that might be amusing for the audience, I do have some self-respect I want to cling to.

Bad enough that I'll be slavering over IK with you, let alone doing a pitbull impression elsewhere.
