Speaking as a non-Brit, footie fan, it was amusing/bemusing to be in London during and after the Portugal game. (The gnashing of teeth could be heard from our hotel room.)

Of course, I was more upset that Latvia got knocked out, even though I thought their ball-handling was crap. (Got to stick up for my dad's country's team.)

Having a winning goal disallowed for no apparent reason in the dying seconds of the game and then going on to pathetically lose the ensuing extra time and penalties will do that to you. Trust me, I know whereof I speak - we've been here before, with the penalties thing. *shudders*

One of the supermarket chains is currently offering free eye tests to Swiss nationals, since that was the nationality of the referee in question...

We only got back to the hotel in time to see the overtime, so we missed seeing the disallowed goal, though it did seem inexplicable that it wasn't allowed.

And I felt rather sorry for poor Becks, missing the very first penalty kick.

Pffft. As someone where I work said on Friday: "Something landed in my garden during the night... I think it was Beckham's penalty!"

At least Lampard and Rooney had good tournaments (while it lasted).
