Day 03 - Your favourite new show (aired THIS TV season)

I'm going to look back at shows that first aired 2012-13 rather than what's coming up, so for me the winner of 'favourite new show' would have to be Orphan Black (though we had a late entry in the form of In the Flesh but I think I'll talk about that when we get to mini series, as it only had 3 episodes in s1).

This is a show I was completely introduced to by Tumblr, having heard nothing about it prior to it popping up everywhere over there, with a cast made up of pretty much nobody I'd heard of before (with the exception of Maria Doyle Kennedy and Matt Frewer), which is a bit surprising considering the amount of Canadian-filmed television I've watched in my fannish career to date.

For anyone who's managed to remain blissfully unaware of this show, the basic premise is that it's about Sarah Manning, on the run from an abusive boyfriend and returning to her adoptive home town where she witnesses the suicide of Elizabeth - what is unexpected is that Sarah sees that Elizabeth is her twin and, since she's in a bit of a situation, steals her identity (which includes not only posing as a police detective but also trying to keep Elizabeth's boyfriend in the dark). From there on in, things get progressively more complicated as Sarah finds that Elizabeth is not the only woman who looks like her...

Apart from Tatiana Maslany's show-stealing performance as the various clones (if we're allowed to say the C-word...) what I really like about this show is the relationship between Sarah and Felix, her foster brother, as well as the developing relationship between Sarah and Paul, Elizabeth's boyfriend, who (like many of the characters on the show) has more to him than meets the eye. Though what meets the eye is mighty fine too. ;)

Anyway, season 1 ended on the obligatory cliffhanger and season 2 will be airing some time in 2014. Highly recommended.
