Day 02 - A show that needs more viewers

I wasn't completely sure what this question is getting at - a lot of the shows I like which have been cancelled could have done with more viewers in order not to get the axe so I'm going to go with 'the show more people need to watch that's on now because it's great'.

This time around (because it could well change depending on how the new season goes, I would never say never after my recent experience with Suits) everyone needs to be watching Person of Interest. This was definitely one of those shows I wasn't really expecting to like as much as I do, as I'm really not a big fan of Jim Caviezel (Reese) and didn't know who Michael Emerson (Finch) was as I couldn't recall actually seeing him in anything else.

What I really like about the show is that they manage to pull off both an overall story arc and episode-of-the-week with equal aplomb, while also having a great ensemble cast including women who kick arse. I am always happy to see Detective Carter (Taraji P. Henson) kick in doors and the addition of Sarah Shahi as a series regular has also pleased me, though I understand there's been some speculation in the fandom that this is setting things up for either Jim Caviezel wanting out and/or a spin-off and that either possibility might pull attention away from the Reese-Finch interaction as the centre of things. I agree this would be a shame, unless it was handled really well, but have to admit that the episode where Shaw (Sarah Shahi's character), who is essentially a proto-Reese, was one of my favourites of season 2 even though there wasn't a great deal of Reese and Finch in it.

While I'm sure there may well be a degree of gadget hand-wavery involved, the development of the characters over the series so far has been great - the main characters all make real changes to how they deal with situations and each other as the episodes progress and we also get a bunch of new (and recurring) characters who add to what's going on in a very real way. It's also a h/c junkie's dream show, with all sorts of stuff going on (but not in an over the top way) in terms of both physical and emotional peril, while so far TPTB have resisted the urge to ship John Reese with anyone in the present, though there was a fridging of a past love interest back in the day as part of his Tragic Backstory.

So, if you're not watching it, please consider giving it a go - season 3 starts 24th September and it doesn't clash with Agents of SHIELD. ;)

In other news, in honour of The Great British Bake-Off I made English muffins over the weekend, which were the technical challenge for the second episode - not quite the same recipe, because I used this one from Dan Lepard, which cheats a bit by using both the griddle and the oven rather than just cooking it in one go like they did on the show. Sadly the end product would not have met Paul Hollywood's exacting standards in terms of shape or size, but they actually did seem to be cooked properly (to my great surprise) - the initial dough was insanely wet and I added quite a lot of extra flour to it, which is probably a big no-no.

Don't think I'll be making it again, but I do regularly make my own bread by hand so there are plenty of other recipes I can use... I've also frozen a bunch of them so we'll see how that works out.

I have to give Person of interest a try... I was already thinking about it, but you made a good case!

And yay English muffins! I hafve to give this a try, especially now that Barcelona is back to temperatures that will allow me use my oven. I'm also watching The Great British Bake-Off and it makes me want to drink tea and get British.

Dan Lepard is THE bread god. There is a guy in Barcelona who is his official translator into Spanish and I have been giving out as present as many copies of The handmade loaf as I can!

It takes a few episodes for Person of Interest to really hit its stride but when it does, it's excellent and the relationships between the characters are so well written I can't help wanting to pimp it to all and sundry - when you've seen the first season, you realise how well drawn the story arc is and how it all hangs together. Even the villains are engaging, which is saying something, and I can't wait to see where s3 is going to end up leading us, as there are still a number of things that need to get sorted out.

I've also recently made Dan Lepard's mocha fig muffins (http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2011/mar/12/mocha-fig-muffins-recipe-lepard?INTCMP=ILCNETTXT3487) and, unlike the English ones, those I will definitely be making again... I'm very fond of his bread recipes because he always seems to have something just a little different and it's nice to see he's appreciated elsewhere too!

Oooh, I heartily concur. I knew and liked Michael Emerson and Jim Caviezel before Person of Interest, but I bailed out a few episodes into the first season because the pacing was slow. Fortunately [livejournal.com profile] mrwubbles twisted my arm encouraged me to take it up again, and I'm so glad I did. The build is a little slow, particularly in the first part of the first season, but the showrunners are methodically building the character relationships and overall plot to pay off regular viewers. And the h/c is fantastic.

I was very impressed by the way that if you look back from the season 1 finale, you can see exactly how they got there and all the little things that happen along the way hang together - so many shows it seems like they just make it up as they go along but this really isn't the case for Person of Interest and I hope that continues.

Also I am more than a little in love with Bear. ;)
