That I have been spamming my Tumblr with Pacific Rim stuff, though I have no shame in relation to this! Anyone on my flist who hasn't seen it yet, why not?

More trope_bingo thoughts - over on Tumblr, someone kindly posted a diagram that sorted out the whole crossover-fusion thing I was asking about


For my 'AU: fusion' I couldn't help myself, I had to go with my idea where Napoleon Solo is a man's man, ladies' man, man about town and Illya Kuryakin is a small-town professor whose new best-selling book on human sexuality just has to be wrong, doesn't it?

So far I also have some ideas for 'AU: apocalypse' (WWW), 'futurefic' (Mag7), 'character in distress' (Mag7) and 'mind control' (UNCLE) and maybe 'kidfic' (Mag7).

I'm struggling a bit with the 'AU: alternate gender norms' prompt as while I've read ABO, it's really not something I can see myself writing - it's a little too gender essentialist for my liking - but I need to look at alternatives to that. Likewise 'slavefic', while a lovely trope that I would usually enjoy immensely, is pretty limiting for me in my current fandoms - two of them are fandoms set immediately post-Civil War after all, with the baggage that entails (and no, AU doesn't help me, not with this).

Orphan Black will have its second season premiere in Spring 2014, but they haven't given a specific date.

I've just started listening to Night Vale after seeing fan works for it on Tumblr. Didn't know what it was for the longest time, I thought it was a particular artist's fan comic, because at first it was just one person I follow posting about it in comics form.

There is no way to spam about Pacific Rim.

I keep seeing people on Tumblr going 'what the hell is this Night Vale stuff?' so its grip on the universe is still not quite complete... I can see how it's probably a Marmite thing and it just works for me.

As for Pacific Rim, this is the first time in ages that the art of the movie book went immediately on my wishlist, along with the prequel graphic novel. I think the last was Master and Commander.

But they're asking about Night Vale, so soon it take over our universe. I actually had a thought about creating a Tumblr for posting from the Night Vale Public Library. There are so many references to the library and the librarians, it calls to me. Wails and moans and screams to me.

Night Vale and Pacific Rim both seem to be doing quite well with AU and fusion fanfics. That's been interesting to see, it's almost like fans are trying to lure in new fans by using their favored crack and mixing in new stuff.

I have the Pacific Rim soundtrack, but I didn't know there was a prequel graphic novel. Must look into that.

Couldn't get into Orphan Black, I didn't find a single character I could generate any enthusiasm or caring for, although a lot of people I know seem to be into it. Pacific Rim I did see, and although I wasn't that big on the film, there are some concepts that won't leave my brain alone - and most of my fandoms are being au'd into it so my interest is increasing :)

Any movie which has canonical soul-bonding is like fandom crack. ;)

What I've enjoyed very much is the amount of back-story that keeps appearing on Tumblr mostly via Travis Beacham, who wrote the prequel comic, and that there's what looks like an amazing art of the movie book supporting it as well. Lots of thought has clearly gone into the world building and also a conscious avoidance of certain tropes...

My friend read the comic, and the novelisation - I think there are a few extra tidbits in there worth picking up. I think there's quite a well-formed wikia too :) I definitely get the impression that there was a long process deciding on backstory and design.
