When the whole tedious public sector v private sector arguments get rolled out again because of something stupid the government has done (this time round it's 'oh, if you live in a cheaper area and work in the public sector, we shouldn't pay you as much as people in the same jobs where it's more expensive to live') and the trolls trot out their tired rhetoric about the bloated and incompetent public sector and their gold-plated pensions etc...

If life is so good in the public sector (oh, if only that were so!), wouldn't everyone want a job in the public sector? Surely it's not because they all think 'oh, I can't live with the ethical dilemma of getting paid a living wage and having reasonable job conditions, I'd much rather get paid crap and treated like shit!'? It always sounds a little like sour grapes to me.

This rant brought to you by the Millionaire's Tory Party and their hangers-on as clearly they're all getting taxed far too much... ;)

Don't you love the con-bots and how they repeat whatever their masters told them without knowing the facts?

The rhetoric is the same here and has been intensified recently since the Government is intending on letting go anywhere between 30,000 to 68,000 people in April and of course they trotted out the gold plated pension line and bloated public sector lines to make this acceptable... All in the name of making the public sector supposedly do more with less!!! Yeah right, it's going to be do at lot less with a lot less people and then the public will complain of long waits and there will be problems because there won't be enough people to take care of things but YEAH we saved MONEY!!! *snark*

I swear the cons (tory's in your case) all have the same handbook!

Don't you understand that to get well-paid people to do more you have to increase the amount of money they get, while nothing incentivises poorly-paid people like a paycut! The laws of supply and demand are only okay if you own a company, while anyone who's an employee and tries to get the most for their experience and expertise is a bloodsucker. Basic Tory economics.

Oh yeah! Don't you love Cons (Tory) economic, it's worked so well in the past...

I believe there is a quote somewhere that says that the definition of insane is to do the same thing over and over again and hope the outcome will be different... They try this again and again and its still not working the way they think it should. They seem to think that if they do it often enough the outcome will change... Not working so far!

What I really really hate is ignoring the amount of unpaid overtime public sector workers do. We actually subsidise the state by caring about delivering a service which is a damn sight more than most private sector workers/companies do.

I also found - cos I got out - that the more pressure there was to use private sector methods the less connection there was between sections and the more short-term decisions were so the less effective project delivery became.

I have to pretty much stand over my workers and make them log all the hours they do, otherwise they'd never get it back, but that's something I very much believe in. Other managers I've known haven't been so firm on this subject and the culture of vocation rather than job is encouraged to capitalise on this - I've always believed that nobody really knows just how much unpaid work does go on and if everyone worked their actual hours and no more it'd be interesting to see what didn't get done...

Having in worked both public and private there are pros and cons on both sides - this is probably why I tend to go public/private/public/private in my jobs :) I'm in the private at the moment because I couldn't live with the idiots in management nor the 'if your face fits' preferential treatment. Give it a couple of yeas and I guess I'll be back public again :)
