30 Days of Fanfic meme

I'd already spotted someone else on my friendslist doing this meme and thought it sounded interesting (more interesting than some that do the rounds, imho) but wanted to start it on the first of the month; apparently nakeisha had the same idea...

1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?

Sheer bloody-minded arrogance, I think. I was reading Stargate SG-1 fic at the time, having stumbled across fanfic as a concept just a few months earlier and then got sucked into SG-1 in a big big way, before I decided I could do much better than a good chunk of what I was reading.

So I started to write, gen initially, and then within weeks of that I found myself collaborating on what was meant to be an on-list slash round robin but which ended up being a two-hander (oo-er matron) between myself and Jennifer Lyon and then I was in the Dark Side proper. Not that this stopped me still writing gen, when the mood struck.

For me I think what attracted me to SG-1 as a fandom was that this was around season 2 when the universe available to write in was pretty much unlimited, with very little having been messed about with by TPTB. Now, I appreciate the wonders of a closed canon and the delights of not worrying about being Jossed at every turn, but then it seemed like an exciting merry-go-round! ;)

Can I ask you when you started writing? (I'm assuming not that hugely long ago, since Stargate hasn't been around that long) Also, had you written any fiction at all before you decided to write fanfic?

I posted my first story in March 1999 and no, I was a complete newbie to writing at that point (and god, on the rare occasions I go back and look at anything I wrote in the first couple of years, it shows!) although I'd always been a terrible bookworm!

OK, that leads to my next question - when you started your first story, did you go "Geez, this is harder than I thought" or did you find that it went pretty smoothly (if you remember!).

Nope, I thought it was pretty easy. It was only as I pushed myself to do better next time around, as well as trying to avoid the flaws I saw in some other folks' work, that I found it getting harder.

Harder in terms of keeping myself interested, that is - that tends to be the main issue for me writing wise a lot of the time, as I'm extremely lazy. I'd much rather read or doss about than write, because writing is much harder work and I spend enough time on the computer at work. ;)

I think I'd have been much more reluctant to have jumped into an established fandom at that time (though I did throw myself into UNCLE shortly after this, and you can't get more established than 'going for 30 years already') but we were talking about a fandom where you could actually keep on top of all that was being posted at that point.

Also, I don't re-read anything I wrote in about the first 5 years if I can avoid it. ;)
