After much procrastination, here's my brief first entry for [livejournal.com profile] au_bingo, with more on the way soon...

Title: Tailor Made For the Part
Fandom: Magnificent 7 (tv show)
Prompt: Other: Actors
Warnings: None
Summary: It's not just cats that fall on their feet...

There was something to be said, at least, for getting cast as the gambler. Ezra couldn't help admiring himself in the full-length mirror before taking his seat in hair and makeup, one hand running lightly over the brocaded fabric of his waistcoat before he turned slightly to eye the cut of his jacket. Very nice and certainly a change from Walmart casual or whatever it was that cop show background characters were wearing this Fall.

"If you could stop preening like a peacock and take a seat, Mr Standish."

Ezra was jolted back to reality, the words reminding him that this was just a pilot and therefore he was on dodgy ground when it came to acting like a diva. There was plenty of time for that sort of behaviour if the show got picked up, though how likely was that? A western, of all things, when the current flavour of the month seemed to be cop shows again?

Not that it was ever wise to consider acting like some kind of asshole around the crew, for any reason, not if you wanted life to be anything other than easy. They might not wield much power, in other senses of the word, but the folks behind the camera could easily make life unbearable for anyone who got too big for his britches. Ezra had seen that happen before and taken note, learning his lesson from someone else's misfortune.

"Sorry," he said, hastening over to where the makeup woman stood, her foot tapping lightly on the trailer floor to indicate that her tolerance with self-absorbed actors was running thin. "I assure you it won't happen again, Miss..." Ezra put on his most charming smile as he spoke, the one he planned to use to good effect in this show, pilot or not.

"Rose," the woman replied, after a long moment where Ezra felt his smile start to waver and wondered if he was losing his edge. "And you can save your charm for the cameras." Her tone had unfrozen a little, though, so he was certain his work here was done. At least for now.

Ezra sat back, stifling a yawn. One other thing about getting back to work, other than the pleasure of thinking about money in his bank account at the end of the month for once, was getting used to the early calls again. Rose's hands were deft and she hummed quietly to herself as she worked, the tune just a little too low to be easily recognisable.

Ezra's eyes began to close, despite his best intentions, his head tipping forward slightly.

"Hey, charmer." Rose's voice was punctuated with a shove to his shoulder, making Ezra jolt upright in the makeup chair. "No time for a nap."

She laughed, but the sound wasn't unkind, just knowing - if anything, it reminded Ezra of his grandmother, who had always been able to figure out what a growing boy was about to do next, long before he'd even thought of it himself.

"You're done," she continued, pulling tissues from the neckline of his shirt as she spoke. "Better get on set before you nod off again." She almost pushed him out of the chair, though Ezra was already moving by that point, knowing she was right and sitting still any longer would be a very bad idea.

It definitely could have been worse, Ezra decided, as he stepped out of the trailer door and down into the Californian sunshine. He put his sunglasses on, then tilted his face toward the sun and thought about the other pilots he'd auditioned for, the ones that were now filming in Vancouver, not to mention the god-awful wig he'd seen waiting for some poor unsuspecting actor here to come along.

Hee! Too cool! Love this and Ezra certainly would be perfect in that role! Good thing the pilot got picked up; the threat of that wig would be a great inspiration. Nice that Ezra has learned to treat the crew well; they really can make things difficult. Love the image of Ezra enjoying his costume; he did look good! Thanks for this!

Once I'd thought of the character-as-actor-as-character thing for Ezra I couldn't not write it! Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed this.. :)
