That's the second of China Mieville's books I've been unable to really get into, so I doubt I'll be trying him again... I'm currently reading Murder on the Flying Scotsman by Carola Dunn.

Un Lun Dun got lots of great reviews in all the usual children's lit sources, but I couldn't get into it either, although I tried a few times. Some of the kids I recommended it to loved it though.

I've read The City and The City, and although I liked the first half...it totally disappointed me in the second half. I never really got into it, though. CMieville is a clever writer, but clever construction not necessarily makes for enjoyable reading.

Been reading lots as well, but I haven't kept track...still, not as much as you. I scatter myself too much. I decided to learn to play violin. I bought a violin and violin for dummies. I like it. Everyone runs away when I try to practice (the cat is the first).

Have you read any 'steampunk' book, by any chance? I am looking, but not really finding.

Trying to think what I've read that might fall into 'steampunk' and I can only think of the following:

The Affinity Bridge by George Mann, which I didn't like very much but YMMV (there are now at least 2 more books in the series).

Mainspring by Jay Lake, which was okay but not fantastic, imo.

The Light Ages by Ian R McLeod, which I didn't finish and is about a society run on 'aether' rather than steam so I'm not sure it really counts.

Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve might kind of fit, as it's about steam-driven cities. Great first book of a series, though I confess I haven't read the rest yet!

I'm afraid I just couldn't get into it and didn't really care what happened to the main character - life is too short to force yourself to read books you're not really interested in! :)

Ah. I ought to declare that Mike Shevdon is a friend of mine, but to be honest I probably wouldn't have persevered with it if he hadn't been.

I still don't care about Niall that much, but I do like the universe Mike built. I just wish that the publishers had used a decent proofreader or copy editor.

Well, he's in good company since there are a number of successful writers (China Mieville being one) that I don't/can't read. Also, I don't think anyone's helped by their book being compared to something by Neil Gaiman, given how much I loved American Gods and the awesomeness that is Coraline. ;)
