Can hardly believe it's been over a month since I last updated... what's happened since then? Erm, not a great deal, really!

My big trip is all booked, apart from the Toronto airport hotel (*waves at [livejournal.com profile] obelix*) and in some ways that's the easier part rather than figuring out where to stay in Newfoundland having a realistic itinerary for my time there. Now I just have to avoid the rampaging moose, who I understand are all related from 6 brought to the island at the turn of the 20th century! Maybe it's the dramatic inbreeding that tempts them to throw themselves in front of passing cars?

Other than that, work is fine although extremely busy, and I'm blaming it somewhat for my lack of ability to concentrate on anything fannish. To the point where I can just about make it through an episode of something, as long as I fast forward past the ads. As far as writing is concerned, I have the attention span of a goldfish. And that's on a good day. Meh.

My creative dry spell is not helped, I confess, by the fact that my local library has delightfully decided to remove all its loan charges, so I can now order a book from any branch in the system for free. I am definitely going to get my money's worth from the council tax this year! :)

There'll be a proper book post at some point but I'm happy to consider recommendations... I've gone back to proper science fiction (well, kind of) after a long period of absence from that genre and two of the very best books I've read this year have been Belarus by Lee Hogan and Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon. In more general fiction (well, kind of) I've also really enjoyed My Soul to Keep by Tananarive Due and Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver, who's yet to write a novel I've not liked. I'm currently building a pile of Vorkorsigan books too, having adored The Warrior's Apprentice but any other science fiction recs gratefully received! ;)

This, of course, means I will see you at MW, right? RIGHT??

I'll second Sith's question. It wouldn't be MW without seeing you there. (When are you hitting Toronto? And would you prefer our futon to a hotel?)

Yep, definitely coming to MW first!

Thanks for your kind offer of the futon, I'll take a raincheck on that if you don't mind? I'm just passing through Toronto airport this time around, rather than the city itself - flying in there and meeting up with [livejournal.com profile] obelix for the trip down and then crashing again before an ungodly early flight to St John's on the way back.

I'm probably the worst person to ask for book recs so I'll just say go abuse the library system on my behalf too :)
