Just a quick update on the new job situation - it looks like all my paperwork has been done, including a quick trip to HQ yesterday to reassure them that my over-honesty in terms of filling in medical disclosure forms is not a problem, so I'm now waiting for the formal offer. Then it's three months and we're off!

Yes, I have to give 3 months' notice in writing. Meh.

In other news, I was getting my hair chopped off yesterday and, as usual, eavesdropping on other conversations going on in the salon, only to discover that the girl cutting hair next to me didn't know what The Ashes was. Seriously. Her customer was talking about being on holiday abroad and her husband spending all day in the pub because The Ashes was on and this chica didn't have a clue.

For USians among us, the only comparable thing I could think of would be not knowing what the World Series or the Superbowl was. Given the recent success of England's men and women in cricket matches against Australia, I can only think the lass in question must have been living under a rock for at least the past couple of weeks, if not most of her life.

3 months is a long notice period! But at least it's getting sorted out and you can look forward to starting it!

They didn't know what the ashes was?? *facepalm*

3 months is 'sell your soul to local government' standard for folks once you get above a certain paygrade. :(

And yes, there was mental facepalming. ;)

Ah, officer grade?? Yeah, I think our O grades are the same thinking about it.

Ah, local government!

I do hope the paperwork comes through and everything goes smoothly.

*Shakes head a girl in hairdressers* Right . . .

It would be lovely to be ignorant of the ashes. Lovely. But the blather about it is everywhere.

Sounds like things are moving ahead well on the job front, which is excellent.

Sounds on a par with the wife of the man who commented on the BBC's live text. He was listening to Test Match Special as they drove somewhere and she tried to engage with the event by asking him who he thought was the better bowler Andrew Flintoff or his brother Freddie? *G*

(For the US brigade Andrew is widely (and more usually) known by the nickname bestowed on him by his Lancashire teammates who with great imagination and wit realised that 'Flintoff' wasn't that different from 'Flintstone'.)

I'm an American and the only thing I know about The Ashes is from Hitchhiker's Guide when Slartibartfast says "They've garble warble fashes" and then he says The Ashes are a trophy of sorts. I didn't know there was an actual tournament called the Ashes. So I've learned something today. Thanks.

Actually, I think most of the kiddie generations that are not us, have been living under air-conditioned, designer labeled, biodegradable rocks. :)

Congratulations on the new job!

For USians

Also, I *heart* this. :-) Canadians, Mexicans, and South Americans are all Americans. I hate that the term tends to be used almost exclusively for US citizens. I'm going to steal "USians" from now on if you don't mind. :-)

P.S. when I was younger (in my 20s), I had no clue what the Superbowl was or the World series. I didn't even know about the different leagues in baseball and stuff like that. My sports education was sadly lacking, and I still don't care at all. In my defense, though, I don't think that those sporting events created the same type of media circus then that they do now. I've never heard of The Ashes either--well, until just now. hehe
