It's not quite what I was looking for, given that I'm currently on more money than the top whack of the payscale, but there's a couple of jobs going that are about 15 miles from where I live (and given that I'm currently paying out for the commute, it probably doesn't work out too different...). What I really want is the next job up, but the only ones going are further away than I care to put up with, so I'm going for these two in the hope that an appropriate vacancy might crop up sometime soon(ish), once I've got my feet under the table somewhat.

Frankly, if they don't at least interview me, I shall be shocked, since it sounds as though I could do the job standing on my head. Closing date is 12th October so I have time to break the news to my boss that I'm applying for something. Still, they have had me for over 3 years, so it's not like I've only just arrived and I have to give 3 month's notice anyway, if I do get offered the job.

That would, of course, be the ultimate irony - spend months campaigning for an office of my own, finally get it and then move! ;)

I had something like that just when I moved from records management to adult learning. For about the last three years of records management my boss and all my records management colleagues were base in an office in the basement (except it was above ground level at the back of the building) under the old court building and I was up on the fourth (top) floor on the 1970's building. I spent so much time traipsing up and down the building getting files from the basement storage rooms etc and go back and forth along the winding corridor from the 1970's building to where my colleagues were. They wanted me down there and I was fed up with been out on my own but there just wasn't space for another body in the office all the time.

The archives staff moved out to a new county records office and their two (non-public) workrooms were earmarked for records management. I did the room layouts, identified furniture we required, was involved in choosing the paint and carpet and was gearing up for the move when I got my adult learning job. On my last day with records managment I had to pack up all my working files to go down to my colleagues and within weeks. When I went to visit thema few weeks later, they'd moved into the revamped offices with loads of space and weren't tripping over each other as we had been in their old office.

That all feels a very long time ago now (the end of 2000).

Good Luck! Sometimes a closer job is worth less money. And maybe you'll get a raise soon. :)

Well, for starters it's 15 miles instead of 50 each way, so that's got to be worth something... anyway, we'll see.

I've been at so many different offices, and also at different places in the same office, that I think I've lost count. I also had the 'we'd love to have you but we've no room!' song a couple of times, otherwise there might not have been so many...

Anyway, we'll see what happens. Unlikely the interviews will be much before November, given it's local government.

The time gained with a job closer might be worth it!
