graculus: (UNCLE)

Thanks to the lovely [livejournal.com profile] obelix who I never seem to get to see around online at the moment, I came home from my holidays clutching a set of the Man from UNCLE boxset, the one with all the episodes in, which I smuggled through customs and am now enjoying. I've watched all of season 1, including the bits in the colour version of the pilot where IK is very decorative and am now at 'The Discotheque Affair' in technicolour season 2. Much love for the boys, who really are so very married. The extras are cute too. And then when I'm done with all those episodes, I have the whole run of Wild Wild West to watch. :)

In other news, am I the only one who was somewhat underwhelmed by The Golden Compass? Yes, I know I'm behind the times, but I rented it the other day and was very much left thinking 'is that it?'. It just seemed to stop as it was really getting going. I'm left wondering if the books (though I haven't read them, so it's just speculation...) would probably have made a better miniseries, though of course they couldn't have afforded the same SFX budget. Any thoughts from the folks who have read them?

No, you weren't the only one to be underwhelmed. It was pretty, but the movie did not serve the plot very well.

Maybe that was the problem - style over substance.

I think style over substance describes the problem I had with the movie. Of course, since I think Philip Pullman is a blowhard who allows personal agenda to overwhelm story, I might not be the best person to comment.

I still haven't seen the movie, but I wasn't that impressed with the book. I know I'm supposed to love it, but I just thought it was kind of "eh"...and I never finished the third one.

I don't think that critics were that kind about the movie either.

I'd tried the audiobook as well, but didn't even get all the way through the first one, which is never a good sign. It's not that it's a YA book, heaven knows I'll happily read enough of those, it's just that the movie felt like the first part of a longer story and that's never good. However, I'm inclined to be more tolerant when I get it as part of my dvd rental deal, rather than paying $10 or more to see it in the cinema. ;)

I have not read the books, but, yes, I was underwhelmed. Even my son was all, "That's it?"

Yep, it just felt like build-up and then it was over. Hmmph.

I'm up to The Super-Colossal Affair. Again, I can't believe it took me this long to start watching the show. :)

And how long will it take for you to start writing it? ;)

I'm just watching Arabian Affair, which is one I remember from the re-runs when I was very young and which I blame entirely for my long-standing love of IK.

I have to admit that one of the first things that crossed my mind (no pun intended) was that Archie Goodwin, Nero Wolfe and (most importantly :)) Saul Panzer were also living in New York in 1964, and that at least two of the three were involved in the intelligence business. For me, the Crossover Thought is the first step on the slippery slope to fanfic...

Not to mention the whole wartime business with Wolfe and Archie, which could easily have brought them into contact with Alexander Waverly and the other guys who set up UNCLE (if we ignore the whole not-aging business with the former)... *tempts* ;)

We were underwhelmed by the Golden Compass, too.
