graculusThe two hutches the kids live in overnight and while I'm at work are set up so I can see them through the kitchen door, but usually when I get up in the morning and stumble downstairs in search of caffeine, they're nowhere to be seen. Ferrets make sleeping the sleep of the just into an Olympic sport.
It's probably not hard to imagine my response this morning to seeing Dougal lying on the floor of the bottom level of the hutch he now has to himself. I was out of the kitchen door and across the 8 feet or so of concrete to his hutch in a matter of milliseconds, I swear. Only to discover what I'd seen was not 'elderly ferret collapsed' but 'disgruntled ferret who has knocked down the ramp allowing him to get up to where he sleeps having to put up with curling up on the floor till someone notices'.
He's fine, and so was I once my heart rate returned to normal. Jeez.
In other news, I discovered that the ferret-owning vet at the surgery I visit has now moved on elsewhere, so it's quite possible I'll be moving to the one which has now opened within walking distance from my house. Dougal (yes, him again) is off to the vets tomorrow to have the lump on his neck drained, which is something we've been doing a couple of times a year since it first cropped up in December '06. It doesn't seem to affect his eating or breathing, but I worry that the thuggish behaviour of the younger lads might lead to a messy accident if it doesn't get reduced in size every once in a while. Draining is easier than dealing with the aftermath of a mugging from Buzz, who is becoming a right little hooligan.
