After their Houdini impressions a few weeks back, I've taken to twisting a piece of wire round the door the ferrets managed to get open (method: grip wire mesh with teeth or claws and rattle till the catch drops, then when the door opens jump out...) and today was the first time since then that I came home to discover that they would have escaped if not for that. Phew. It's always Remus who does the door opening bit, or at least he's the only one I've ever seen really rattling the door itself.

Meanwhile, in other news there is movement over the road on the soon-to-be building site. I came home at the end of last week to see that the builders had cut down the row of poplars that previously lined the front of the property and had put up 6' wire fences. Apparently there's also someone staying in the empty bungalow 24/7, to prevent squatters I guess.

The downside is apparently that they're putting in a new road (or at least cul de sac) directly opposite my house and my neighbours are all up in arms because it means widening the road itself. The upside of this is that it will hopefully stop my immediate neighbours from parking outside the front of the house because they're too lazy to go round the back. In fact, there are quite a few people round here who seem quite a bit more vexed about all of this than I am, considering it's the verge outside my house that's going to be the majority of what's removed.

What else? I have, of course, just started week 3 of my promised 4-week sojourn as team manager, though I'm not particularly reassured by discovering that none of the external applicants interviewed for the job I'm currently covering were worth appointing. There's an internal candidate being interviewed at some point and it's the guy I took over from, so I expect unless he buggers up the interview completely he'll get it.
