More work stuff...
Jun. 21st, 2005 07:53 pmThis afternoon I finally managed to catch up with the woman who heads the department where I'm going to be based when I start my new job - I'm in a bit of an odd position because for at least 3 months I'm going to be based in her section though I won't actually be managed by her, though if I like it there I shall probably end up agitating to stay. It's a logical place for me to be based, really, since part of my new job is liaison between the people who work in that section and other people in my division based all over the city. Still, since it's local government, there's no reason to think that logic will have anything to do with where I end up.
Anyway, it was an amusing phone call, as she was so excited to speak with me and told me how much she was looking forward to me starting there. I was a little taken aback by her enthusiasm, which really wasn't quite the reaction I was expecting, even if she is looking forward to me starting work there. I guess it's a British thing. ;)
So, next Friday I'm off to visit her and see where I'm going to be based. Hopefully the guy who is going to be supervising me (from elsewhere in the city) is going to be there too so I can start to get my head round the important things like "who signs my mileage forms?" and "who's going to pay for these books I need?". Fortunately I've given what I need to do when I start some thought so I can expound a little on that - my interview was amusing in that it was obvious from quite early on that they didn't really have a clear idea of what this (new) post was going to entail so as long as I keep coming up with stuff there's a good chance it'll get agreed.
More news as it happens, though I feel like I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. I keep expecting something to go awry and wondering why it's all going so well. Jinx!
