graculus: (weasel)

Sitting there performing the regular chore of cutting weasel toenails, I find myself watching the people over the road. On Friday, I left home to find removals vans filling up as they prepare to move out - rumour has it they've sold the land the bungalow they live in is built on, which goes back towards the fields for almost a mile, and it's going to have houses built on it.

This morning, he's unscrewing the house sign from one of the posts at the entrance to their property. Let's just say this: their house is number 514. What are the chances of them ever moving into a property that happens to have that number? And it's not as if it's a sign that's likely to have sentimental value (along the 'my child made this' kind of thing) since it's a cast-iron generic order-from-any-hardware-store thing that couldn't have cost more than £25.

But then I guess this comes in the league of the people who move house and take the lightbulbs and bath plugs with them because, of course, lightbulbs are in such short supply nationally! ;)

When I was a kid, some friends of my parents moved into a house where the previous owners had unscrewed and removed the actual light fittings in every room. God knows why, but it was hella impressive.

I *think* you have legal problems if you do that sort of thing now.

Still, there are always people ready to dig up most of the garden or be otherwsie odd. The previous owners of this house left three old kitchen cabinets, and what I have to hope was a solitary cat turd, in the cellar here.

You're certainly supposed to do an inventory of what you're leaving behind and it's meant to be legally binding, but would it be worth it to sue for the cost of odds and ends? Maybe if you had to get an electrician in to redo all the lights it would be, but anything less than that?

Lightbulbs and toilet rolls? That's just a sign you're cheap.
