graculus: (It's all Cyc's fault)

Oh, and while I'm prevaricating I should probably say that I watched the dvd of Howl's Moving Castle, which turned up in the post this week (hmm, how did that happen?), including the various interviews on the second disc.

Where the film is concerned, I actually enjoyed it more than I did the first time around, which was a pleasant surprise. Though that might have been because I watched the subtitled version, not the dubbed one - I don't care what Pete Docter thinks, Christian Bale was not the right voice for Howl. It's probably up there in the top 3 Miyazaki movies for me, now, but Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke tend to vie for the top two spots.

It was nice to see, having loved the book, that Diana Wynne Jones was so overwhelmingly positive about the movie. The only thing that annoyed me was when John Lasseter (who I have a great deal of respect for as a writer and director because of the two Toy Story movies and his promotion of Miyazaki's work in the US) was talking about how great it was that Miyazaki came up with this idea of the door that opens into different dimensions and the moving castle itself. I was sitting there going "Dude, it's in the book!", just amazed that considering it clearly says on the titles 'based on the novel by Diana Wynne Jones' that someone so heavily involved in the English dub of the movie would say something so asinine.

E.T.A. forgot to say, I got an email from the lottery people telling me there was good news regarding my ticket for yesterday's draw! Yes, you guessed it, I won £10 and will try not to spend it all at once... ;)

He said what?

Oh lord, John Lasseter said that the door into different dimensions was Miyazaki's idea? Did the man pay no attention classic fantasy? The doorway into a different dimensions rather central to the Narnia stories!
Now that you mention it, I'm kinda shocked that a bigger deal hasn't been made of Diana Wynne Jones' source material in the English speaking world.

It was a real WTF moment for me too.

I have to confess, I only got into DWJ's stuff myself in recent months, and I don't know how I overlooked her before - I'm thankful to the librarians on my friends list. ;)
