Following a suggestion from [livejournal.com profile] khek, I investigated the local library for audiobooks to accompany me on my drive to and from work every day, with some success to date: so far I've had The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan (which was excellent) and am about a third of the way through American Gods by Neil Gaiman. While I might not join in with the Gaiman-worship some of my associates over here on Livejournal seem to get up to on a regular basis, I have to say the man's mind is very strange and he's clearly got an imagination and then some.

Next up are The Business by Iain Banks and The Time-traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, while I understand there's a version of Beowulf with Seamus Heaney reading his own translation floating around the city somewhere, which I shall doubtless snag at some point...

Speaking of libraries, I have to say I was surprised (and pleased) to discover that where I'm now working has libraries that stay open late (as in, after work hours for everyone else), that apparently open every day (including Sunday!) and that, unlike my current location, don't mind you returning books which have been borrowed from another branch. Must have a conversation with them about acquiring a library card. ;)

And in the old-fashioned paper world, I'm currently reading Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke, which is very interesting but suffers from Goblet-of-Fire-itis - in other words, it needed a damn good editing to deal with some of the superfluities. Another one who thinks she gets paid by the word, apparently. Next up, Windfall, with my copy of The Charnel Prince by Greg Keyes also waiting to be read.

Meanwhile, in the domestic arena, my fridge seems to have decided it's going to over-compensate for the fact that I defrosted it the other day for the first time in months - even on its lowest setting, the milk is still a half-frozen bottle of slush and the fruit juice likewise. This is more than a little vexing.

Back to training duties next week, with three full days out of the six signed up for that. I was starting to croak a bit last week and wondered if I was going to lose my voice at an inconvenient moment (which has happened before) but it seems to be fine now. I'm also back to dosing myself up with echinacea, which may or may not be helping my immune system fight stuff off...

I suppose I really ought to go and see the new HP movie, but I'm much more tempted to spend the afternoon writing then make popcorn and watch A Dangerous Man: Lawrence after Arabia (6.45pm, ITV3) instead. ;)

Meanwhile, if anyone can find me links to The Lovesong of Bastard and Idiot by Predatrix and The Care of Infants by Stella Hobbit (the only two fics on my recs page that I can't find links to, post-Detention meltdown), it would be much appreciated...

[livejournal.com profile] snarryficfind has a thread about The Lovesong of Bastard and Idiot here (http://www.livejournal.com/community/snarryficfind/9572.html). I think Care of Infants might be a bit more difficult - [livejournal.com profile] stellahobbit is affected by Australian legislation.

I've actually found a link to Stella Hobbit's story, here on livejournal, but perhaps I need to prod [livejournal.com profile] predatrix to archive her story somewhere...? ;)

Im glad they're working out! I just love books on cd; I can listen to the books I can't seem to get into in print, and I can "cheat" by listening to kids' books that I should read but don't want to bother with. :)

Your regular library closes when work does? I want to work there! We're open until 9pm three nights a week (it used to be four, until the budget cuts a couple years ago) seven hours on Saturday and three hours on Sunday. And lately, it seems like everyone keeps telling me that they can't work their scheduled night or weekend shift...

Have you seen HP yet? I'm still trying to find someone to go with me. It's a pain to have no media-fan RL friends.
