Ferret update: Dougal is currently demonstrating the significant lack of brainpower usually attributed to much smaller animals than the ferret, as he resolutely ignores the fact he has had a large lump taken out of his tail and sutures in there to hold it together. Since they're such sociable animals, I decided I'd see if solitary confinement was really necessary and so far there's no sign of anyone trying to gnaw on what's left of his tail.

Dougal looks kind of odd, though, since they shaved his tail from close to his backside (since the lump was towards that end) but left the last inch or so, which was kind of sparsely haired anyway due to his usual summer coatloss episodes. Poor lamb looks like he's been the subject of a demented dog-clipper. Photos to follow if I can find where I put my camera. ;)

He's beautiful... doesn't need to use his brain ;)

I'm glad things seem smooth.

Yes, he seems to be fine, though he's back at the vets for a check-up on Friday - we'll get the histology results then as well and hopefully it will all turn out to have been a storm in a teacup.

Thanks, it's been a bit anxiety-provoking (for me, anyway!) so it's funny how little he seems bothered by it all...

awww, poor little creature. maybe it's the drugs making him less than...intelligent for the time being?

That's the thing, he's not on any drugs - he just doesn't seem to realise he has a lot less tail than he started the week with... ;)

Phantom Tail syndrome? You know, like when people who have an arm or leg removed, they can still feel it? It's a genuine thing, and they aren't losing their minds.

No, he still has a tail, they just incised the lump out of it about a third of the way up... perhaps he's just so dumb the nerve impulses aren't making it all the way to his brain? ;)
