Counting down the days to MediaWest, but the panel program reminds me that there are panels where I'd lose the will to live should I venture in...

Seriously, I really don't think I'm going to that many panels this year... nothing much leaps out.

That'd be the one I'd be *most* likely to attend, if only for the sheer pleasure of poking them with a stick. I'd volunteer to help host it but then you have to play nice... ;)

I went over when I saw your post and had a look. They did not select any of the panels I suggested, and they chose none of the controversial ones I knew of from anyone else, either-- and not even any of the interesting ones I'd noticed from the first list got in there. I read the whole list and thought "How dreadfully fucking dull."

I'm starting to feel somewhat better about not going. :-P

I know this is the first year (of 3) I haven't either a) suggested topics and/or b) volunteered to run panels. Yes, it's usually a thankless task in so many ways, but I'm sure this is the most crushingly dull panel line-up I've ever seen.

And no, I don't think you *should* feel better about not going! ;)

No, I wasn't joking. Last year I think Cara and I played the panel game - the one word or sentence answer to panel topics that saves you losing the will to live through a bland and doubtlessly circular discussion only interesting to the irrepressibly anal amongst us. And still those weren't as bad as that.

The panel line-up does seem a little relentlessly gen this year, I agree. And as for the Columbia thing, who knows - where's the Iraqi war panel?

I'm seriously rethinking next year (saying 'blow this, I'm going to Connexions instead'), so the con had better be good.

Wow. That's honestly a panel topic--I thought you were joking! What's the point? The people who think that are going to say "yes", and then sit there agreeing with each other. The people who would say "no" probably won't go.

I've only been going to MW for three years...this will be the fourth. I have to say, I haven't been impressed with any of the panels during that time. I went to a bunch the first year, four or five the second year, and I think I peeked in on one--maybe two last year. I wasn't really impressed. This year sounds like I'll be popping my head in on a couple, then going off to find better things to do...

Honestly, for me the best discussions come from meeting people you only know online and talking with them, not from the organized panels. It seems like the same people run them all anyway, so there are no varied points of view...just the same people who volunteered way back when pontificating on their view of the show.

Maybe it used to be different in the past, but that's what I've seen in my time there. Or maybe some shows have better discussions than others?
