Made the mistake of getting up as I was having trouble getting to sleep and checking my email. Frankly, this one might work for [livejournal.com profile] seanchaidh's list of stupid comments/questions.

How can anyone in this day and age apparently not know that Arabic is a language spoken by millions all across the Middle East and further afield? To the point that when someone asks for the Arabic for a particular word they suggest that the language they really want is Farsi and imply that only archaic versions of Arabic still remain.

Why worry? Arabic is only spoken by approximately 286 million people and is an official language of 25 countries.

Uh... guh?

Okay, this has made me go grab my scrap book from my cruise... The top nine dumb questions people asked the cruise crew:

What religion are the people with the little bandaids behind their ear?
What elevation is the ship at?
Does the crew sleep on board?
Do I put my luggage out in the hall before or after I go to sleep?
Do these stairs go to the front or the back of the boat?
What do you do with the ice sculptures after they melt?
Is that island surrounded by water?
Is the t.v. on board satelite or cable?
(At the photo gallery) So how do I know which photo is mine?

Some people are just dumb as a box of rocks. What can you do?

In this day and age, I'm not surprised by people not knowing basics.

You learn so much by listening to these types of questions and answers. Did you know that the Beatles were Paul McCartney's first back up band? ;)

I'm sure at times he would like to tell himself this. ;)

People are stupid, and then there's a whole subset of the stupid people that are really stupid.

You know, the kind of people that honestly think Jews and Christians worship different Gods.

Want to hear a good one? True story.

I was in my senior psychology class, and there was this rather flighty girl in there. She was as sweet as she could be, but rather clueless on certain things. One day in class, the discussion got around to TV and its influences on society. She didn't realize that "TV" was an abbreviation for television.

As I stated in [livejournal.com profile] amused_library recently in comment to someones trials and tribulations with stupid patrons: People are really stupid sometimes.

Oh, yeah. And always assume the worst about them. Common sense? It ain't so common. That's why I want signs and barriers in front of tanks and stuff in the Canadian War Museum, because stupid-assed people climb on them - the vehicles are also parked on cement floors - without thinking about their safety or that these things are not part of an amusement park.

I frequent want to do *headtank* in that gallery. Almost every shift.

*facepalm* Oy vey.

I was reading an otherwise nice Jack/Daniel/Sam fic this evening and there were words being thrown in that were Arabic, and yet it was a Moebius I/II missing scene. Um, hello? Arabic doesn't EXIST YET in Ancient Egyptian where the language was *actually* Egyptian. Totally different beasts.

I'm curious where one would go to get a translation to Ancient Egyptian? I have this story, you see, and a few years ago when I was trying to find a website that might be helpful, I came up short.

You do what everyone else does and make shit up. ;)

From the movie and the various eps where Daniel has interacted with the Abydonians there should be enough to string something together that at least looks right, whereas Arabic and the Abydonian language don't even sound all that similar.

Good to know. ;-) That's what I'd decided to do, but then I began to wonder if my fellow fen would catch me out and mock me for not being thorough in my research. Thanks for the guidance.

Well, if you've been looking and can't find anything then the chances of getting caught out diminish greatly, I would have thought...

There might be websites, but what I use is Budge's Egyptian dictionaries. It's got interesting things in there, and it's a litle interesting because there are several words for the same concepts. I have no idea what the different subtleties may mean, but it's really interesting.

(Yes, Budge. Alas. The man is prolific if oddly useful.:))
