This pick from 1983 isn't necessarily the most representative of the sound the Payola$ are known for, but it's a certified bop with a hook that still gets stuck in my head on a regular basis.

Just another day in the life of the Force’s Champion.

What's Making Me Happy Today: Dimension 20 on a Bus
Apr. 1st, 2026 08:45 pmLast year, as an interstitial segment on Game Changer, the folks over at Dropout.tv filmed an improv skit called Dimension 20: On a Bus, where the concept was four professional GMs sitting down to play D&D with a GM who had a limited understanding of how the game was played.
It was a funny bit, but I don't think anyone expected the calls for more to actually result in anything. Until now, when for April Fool's Day, Dropout released a full one-hour episode of it. It's only up on their streaming service, but here's the teaser trailer that dropped without warning:
And man, the actual episode did not disappoint. It was a hilarious mess that hit just the right balance of winding up a bunch of professional storytellers, but also letting them do what they best as they tried to salvage things. I laughed to the point of tears, but I also legitimately picked up pointers about character-building and how to move a plot along (to get to LAX to fly out to an M&M wedding in Lisbon when everything keeps blowing up).

Mission 116 Update for March 2026 (Month 23) – No Foolin’ Day
Apr. 1st, 2026 10:01 amWhat a bust of a month as far as the goals list was concerned, lol! Basically, I spent the entire month sick as can be and accomplished nothing. It was just a simple viral cold far as I could tell, no fever, no infection. Just general misery. Much better now, although still trying to rebuild energy and strength slowly. Bouncing back doesn't happen at my age, it's a slow, long climb.
As I said before, I'm not particularly bothered by any lack of progress on my goals list going forward. If it happens it happens. I'm looking forward to exploring my new home state as the weather warms – the big tulip festival is this month and I really want to see all those beautiful fields of colorful flowers.

1/5. I am a more evolved human who DNF’s books now, so it has been a long time since I finished something and was this mad about it. See, what happened was I started this while sick and injured and under a lot of stress, and quickly realized it’s bad, but I thought it was boring protagonist bad. Dumb Silicon Valley dude wank fantasies bad. But entertaining enough to create mild noise in my brain, and it sounded like more effort to get a new book, you know?
And then I read the last quarter and now I’m mad and I’m crawling out of my hole to tell you about it.
Let’s back up. This is a scifi technothriller about a boring software middle manager dude who gets told he is of cosmic importance by a new AI, sending him off on a journey through the multiverse and time to try and save the world. One of those scifi books where the author had a huge pile of things (magic as software exploits, occult horror AI, multiverses, Dyson Spheres, the Black Dahlia, etc. etc.), refused to discard a single one of them, and stitched them all together with an afterthought of a narrator who somehow got less and less interesting the more time we spent with him. Also, the sex in this book is seriously cringe.
But then I got to the part where – I’m not going to spoiler cut this. I’ll keep it to general situational vibes, but if you really don’t want to know, stop here. There’s a point where our loser protagonist ends up in a future where humans are so scared of AI that they have outlawed all progress and live in a weird, stunted leisure society. Their fear of AI is pretty legit considering there is a history of Ais committing genocide. But the whole point of the book is to sneer at this society and for our protag to think snidely about how they have a slave class of sub-intelligent robots, and he’s got to fix everything by allowing free and rampant AI development.
Which, like. I’m not one of those people who froths at the mouth about how AI kills kittens or whatever. But my dude. My man. What. The fuck. It’s the smugness about the slave labor that gets me. Like, excuse me? Slave labor is not an exclusive feature of stagnant societies. Exploitation is often the engine of progress! Including in the AI boom right the fuck now!
And it’s not like he’s making a big intellectual stand here – the book isn’t even internally coherent enough for that. Our protagonist himself is literally exploited for labor at multiple points! By AIs!
Ugh. At least being this annoyed has cleared my sinuses.
Content notes: Torture, drugged sex, noncon

TV Tuesday: Where's That Going?
Mar. 31st, 2026 11:55 am
Within 24 hours there were two stories in the news about Netflix:
Kpop Demon Hunters directors and writers will be paid “about $50 million between them over five years, and grant them shares of merchandising and music revenue”
Netflix, for the second time in a little over a year, is raising prices for its three plans in the U.S
Being a worldwide company, one show, however expensive, is only part of a financial deficit. But amidst an industry which is shedding workers across the board, are large paydays for hits part of it? Or is the very large pool of shows itself part of the problem, making the few standouts more valuable?
Dark Shadows: The Wide Winged Moon by Kark
Mar. 30th, 2026 10:29 amFandom: Dark Shadows
Pairings/Characters: Magda Rakosi/Sandor Rakosi, Angelique Bouchard Collins/Barnabas Collins, Barnabas Collins/Julia Hoffman, Nicholas Blair, Aristede, Andreas Petofi, Quentin Collins
Rating: Gen
Length: 93,699 words
Creator Links: AO3 Profile
Theme: Siblings
Summary: What if Julia loses her memory? What would happen if Blair had to actually help the Collins family? The answer was obvious: He'd hate it. He'd hate it soooo hard.
Reccer's Notes: Siblings come in all flavors, and this fic explores the dynamics of a witches' coven brother and sister, Angelique and Nicholas. With Satan as "parent," how is the more familiar sibling relationship different? How is it the same? Author delves delightfully into the question, as well as the all-too-human found-sibling relationship of Quentin and Julia.

Heated Rivalry: Taken by Evilharlowe
Mar. 30th, 2026 03:19 pmFandom: Heated Rivalry
Characters/Pairings: Shane Hollander/Ilya Rozanov, Alexei Rosanov, Yuna Hollander, David Hollander, Hayden Pike, Jackie Pike, Rose Landry
Rating: Teen
Length: 7394
Content Notes: no AO3 warnings apply.
Creator Links: Evilharlowe on AO3
Themes: Siblings, Action/Adventure, Competence, Established relationship + plot, canon LGBTQ+ characters
Summary: Four months after their wedding, Shane Hollander and Hayden Pike are kidnapped by disillusioned fans who see Shane's coming out and departure from the Voyageurs as the ultimate betrayal. With the police off-limits and a ten million dollar ransom on the clock, Ilya makes the last phone call he ever expected to make — to the estranged brother in Moscow he hasn't spoken to in three years. What follows is a night of unlikely alliances, hockey sticks used as weapons, and the discovery that family isn't defined by blood but by who shows up when everything falls apart.
Reccer's Notes: This is a rare Heated Rivalry story in which Alexei Rozanov isn't a complete shit. He's fairly one-dimensionally a baddie in both the books and the show, but here, while the author doesn't pretend he's a nice guy, the fic leans into him being a police officer and gives him both competence, and underlying family loyalty to Ilya when the chips are down. Another plus is that Shane is far from being a helpless victim. Gripping, and an excellent read.

Shadowhunters: Weakness and Strength by Marchling
Mar. 29th, 2026 09:09 pmFandom: Shadowhunters
Pairings/Characters: Magnus Bane/Alec Lightwood, Jace Wayland, Isabelle Lightwood
Rating: Mature
Length: 31,296 words

Marchling
Theme: Siblings
Summary: Years ago, when Alec, Izzy and Jace were just starting going on missions, Alec pushed Jace out of the way of a rare and lethal demon. The demon's power rested in ice and its venom almost froze its victims to death. Alec survived but was warned that he would never truly be cured. The venom would rise up in his blood again and again.
With Valentine making moves against everyone Alec loves, Jace trapped in the Institute and his relationship with Magnus still so new, it's the worst time for the venom to strike him down again... but that's exactly what's happening.
Reccer's Notes: This showcases a lovely supportive relationship between Alec, Jace, and Izzy. Whenever I'm in the mood for hurt/comfort, this is one of the fics I always come back to.
