I'm on the list from whence this site (GateReview - http://www.gatereview.net) sprang, and had an interesting... sharing of views with the people involved.
From what I understand, these reviews have nothing to do with the writer. They're not meant to get you feedback, or make you happy, or make you mull over future writing... the writer is just not important after they place their fic on the web, after which it's fair game. Rather, GR is for the readers, new and old (I suppose) who are tired of wading through dreck and would rather read others' opinions before taking a looksee at the fic itself. Says the site "The Gate Review hopes to contribute to fandom in the form of reviews that will be available to benefit all readers of Stargate fiction." Now, that's what they say, not what I personally believe. If I want to know if I'm going to like a fic or not... I read the thing, or I at least start. To me, GR just feels like a public feedback forum
