Random Friday morning thoughts...

You know, I'm always amused by people posting stuff in their lj with the apparently-obligatory 'look! I'm being contentious!' tag to their opinion (well-stated or pulled out of their arse, it doesn't really matter). It smacks so much of Look At Me, I Am *Such* A Rebel (Even If I Am Still Living At Home At Age 30)!!!!111!! ;)

Especially when most of the time their opinion isn't:

a) all that unique in the fandom
b) all that contentious anyway, because of a)
c) anything other than further evidence that they are part of the rich tapestry of nutjobs and oddballs that seem to comprise a significant proportion of fandom as we know it

One sure way to know if your opinion is contentious - if you feel you have to warn for it (why exactly would you do that anyway, other than the obvious flame-baiting potential?) then it probably isn't quite as radical as you think it is.

*sigh* I'd like to be contentious but I'm afraid I'm not. I've never even had a flame. I think there's something wrong with me. I'm either too polite or too scary to attract opinionated freaks and weirdos. Bugger.

No Fair! I warn and my posts are contentious (I think?) and I've never gotten a flame! All I ever get is yeah I agree...

I sometimes put stuff behind a cut just in case someone isn't in the mood, if you know what I mean. I mean, I know people reading my LJ probably expect Shrub-bashing, but they may not be in the mood for loud shrieking four-letter rants about not being able to find my birth control pills. ;)
