We were joking before the club competition that those of us fencing foil (i.e. the newbies) were the drag factor on each team, but I think we generally acquitted ourselves pretty well.
To be honest, the team that came 4th suffered most - it had relative newbies fencing both foil and epee, so the poor lad doing sabre was up against it in a big way. We also know him well enough to know he takes a bit of time to warm up, so when we ended up fencing his team first and won the toss to decide fight order, we made him go first and he got slaughtered 5-0. That's one of the dangers of fighting people who know your bad habits!
I'm trying to mentally frame the regional comp as 'more opportunity to practice' but the element of actual competition keeps sneaking in there - as long as I do my best, then I'll be happy. Happier if I win something, naturally, but we have no benchmark for how good the folks are who're coming from the other clubs.
