I guess we're also getting into the thing about live fandoms and authorial room for manoeuvre v. the risk of being Jossed, alongside fandoms like UNCLE where the canon is closed.
In HP, folks were creating fanon to fill in the bits that JKR hadn't specified or to explain them away, some of which she then amended later on (eg Snape's status as a half-blood wasn't clarified till well into the series so we get a load of Snape Manor stories where he's a Pureblood through and through...).
